Britain’s Modern Defender Rival Is Finally Having Its Breakout Moment

The Ineos Grenadier is filling the void of the Land Rover icon in more ways than one, but that’s just the beginning of the brand’s ambitions.

Following Land Rover’s discontinuation of the original Defender, the Ineos Grenadier stepped in as the icon’s spiritual successor. Even with kindred values and an overwhelmingly utilitarian look, though, it has since remained somewhat niche in its appeal.

Per Ineos’s latest update, it seems the winds could be changing in the Grenadier’s favor. After three full years in production, the robust body-on-frame SUV is on track for a breakout performance in 2026.

As impressive a feat as that is, it’s made all the more important because it’s an indication of momentum. The brand is looking to deliver on even bigger ambitions.

The Grenadier is on a tear

According to an announcement this week, Ineos has posted a record number of orders for the Grenadier throughout Q1 2026. The statement didn’t cite a count, but the SUV is up 20 percent in the same period year-over-year.

That’s a notable increase any automaker would celebrate, and it’s especially impressive from a start-up that’s moved around 35,000 vehicles to date. Buoyed by strong retail sales, Ineos is quietly finding new opportunities in the fleet segment.

In a variety of different applications, too. From open-topped safari rigs to Hertz airport rentals, Ineos has continued to expand the Grenadier’s global presence to reach more buyers, and the SUV’s resume hasn’t just been limited to service roles.

True to the Defender that inspired it, the Grenadier is increasingly establishing itself as a workhorse with real-world utility. Beyond providing transport for the Kenyan Red Cross, Ineos is now also working with a roster of different fire and rescue services in Germany, Spain and France.

For good reason. While the SUV hasn’t been without its criticism (especially for the steering before this year’s Grenadier update), it brings a lot to the table between its proven BMW-sourced inline-six and its rugged construction.

Ineos is dreaming bigger still

Of course, as impressive as the Grenadier’s sales growth is, it’s really just the beginning of the brand’s larger goals. In a recent interview with CNBC, CEO Lynn Calder stated that the company is targeting 200,000 to 250,000 sales by the early 2030s, at the latest.

To achieve those kinds of numbers, the brand plans to handle some of the production at its current plant in France, though there’s also the potential to add a factory in the United States.

After all, Ineos has been eyeing a North American facility for a few years at this point, and there’s only more reason to do so now with the uncertainty of global trade relations. It’s an important market, too, as CCO Mike Whittington noted that the United States accounts for 60 percent of the company’s sales.

In combination with a continued uptick in numbers, such a facility could finally set the stage for the company’s smaller, more affordable Grenadier alternative. After originally announcing the Fusilier SUV in 2024, Ineos put a pin in the project because of cooling EV demand.

But with a gas-electric range extender powertrain, it’s a much more viable option. Moreover, with fuel prices and the reports of Land Rover’s Defender mini-me, the timing of its release is increasingly relevant.
