Britain’s Modern, Rugged Land Rover Defender Rival Returns Even More Refined

Consumers and enthusiasts alike love to drool over classic, boxy 4x4s, but the reality is that such vehicles are often ill-equipped for daily driving. Spartan interiors, rough road manners and poor fuel economy mean that models like the original Land Rover Defender can be pretty overrated if you don’t actually plan on exploring parts unknown.

Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped Ineos from looking to capitalize on the British icon’s departure with its retro-styled Grenadier. Rather than catering to the luxury market through posh trimmings and creature comforts, the SUV puts utility first by way of its rugged body-on-frame construction and classic off-road style.

With the Grenadier now in its third full year of production, Ineos has responded to past feedback by giving the model some subtle but impactful tweaks inside and out. Moreover, there’s a new special trim option that brings a look that’s equal parts shadowy and understated.

Cleaning up the slop

There aren’t any changes to the Ineos Grenadier powertrain for 2026, so it’ll bring the same trusty, BMW-sourced 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. Output is again rated at 281 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, and power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Though it’s not a corner-carver, the changes are supposed to help response on backroads.

Rather, the big difference comes in the form of its steering. Thanks to a new variable-ratio steering box, Ineos says that it brings a “tighter, firmer feel to deliver more precision and greater responsiveness.”

In other words, beyond improving the Grenadier’s straight-line tracking, the updates also ensure that it handles better through corners. The setup will hardly make it into a performance SUV, but it does yield a slightly smaller turning circle and easier maneuverability.

Elsewhere, Ineos has focused on the user experience and safety. Along with getting a climate control system overhaul with improvements to make the cabin more comfortable, the Grenadier also benefits from updates to its driver assist systems for continued compliance.

By and large, initial reviews seem to be positive, even if Ineos’s off-roader continues to offer compromises because of its inherent utility.

An exercise in subtlety

As you can probably guess from the name, the Black Edition gives the Grenadier a muted, moody makeover. It’s a common look in the car industry nowadays, but it’s especially suited to the simple lines of the Ineos.

Around the outside, it dons an “Inky Black” paint option, and the hue comes complemented by a set of gloss black 18-inch alloy wheels. The brand’s Dark Exterior also brings a matching black grille and a set of dark skidplates.

What’s more, Ineos is equipping Black Edition models with tinted privacy glass and a lockable storage spare wheel storage for security, as well as some dark headlining and carpet to carry the look through inside.

Add to that upgrades from the Fieldmaster trim like leather upholstery, heated front seats, a better stereo system and some Ineos’s pop-up roof windows, and it makes for a tempting option ahead of the raft of boxy, retro-styled SUVs that are about to hit the market — be it Mercedes-Benz’s Baby G or JLR’s little Defender, competition is coming.
