The 1980s was far from a heyday for the American whiskey industry. Vodka and white rum became insanely popular, trendy with younger drinkers because of how easily they could be blended into the booming cocktail scene at the time.

Known as the Glut Era for the category at the time, bourbon was earning a serious stigma as a drunkard’s drink and bad sales meant companies were sitting on a surplus of stock that they couldn’t move. For one legacy distillery, however, the ‘80s and ‘90s is when it started moving to the forefront. And with its latest annual series, the brand honors its heritage in a big way.

Light at the end of the barrel

The ‘80s is considered something of a dark period for American whiskey, but brands like Jim Beam and Wild Turkey were quietly positioning the industry for a prosperous 21st century.

While Beam’s Booker’s label was slowly creating a desire for small batch bourbons, Turkey was redefining itself in the American consciousness thanks to a key change in ownership.

Purchased in the ‘70s by New York-based spirits brand Austin Nichols, Wild Turkey became nationally distributed but also cemented the identity of its bourbon. The 101 label was established as the brand’s flagship and bigger, spice-forward profiles were brought to the forefront.

With its new Austin Nichols Archives series, Turkey aims to recapture the spirit of what enthusiasts consider the brand’s absolute peak.

Cheesy does it

In the mid-to-late ‘80s, Turkey started putting gold foil labeling on some of its higher-end bottles. Ranging from 8-year expressions of 101 to 12-year export bourbons, these collectively have become referred to by collectors as “Cheesy Gold Foil” bottles.

Implying some level of contempt for the tacky aesthetic, the term also comes with a sense of reverence, cheekily acknowledging how the liquid inside starkly contrasted the exterior packaging. These releases have become mythological among enthusiasts, recognizing the period as a peak for the distillery.

Today, our newfound respect for American whiskey has meant that older barrels are a bit scarcer or intentionally allocated. Due to the long-sitting stock during the Glut Era, distilleries were trying to find homes for older liquids. And with more mainstream releases finding age statements upward of eight years, these whiskeys possessed a characteristic known as “mature oak funk.”

More interaction with the oak meant that the profile was more complex than your standard oaky notes. This was only expressed more boldly with the higher 101-proof bottling.

Funk revival

The Austin Nichols Archives comes after the discontinuation of Turkey’s Master’s Keep series last year, which itself has played a big role in influencing this current new wave of premium whiskey on the market since launching in 2015.

But this new limited-edition series is no haphazard replacement; it’s the passion project of Associate Master Blender Bruce Russell, who conceived the idea over a decade ago in order to honor his grandfather Jimmy Russell, who’s been the Master Distiller at Turkey since 1954.

Debuting the collection is the inaugural Gold Foil Edition, looking back at those Cheesy Gold Foil releases and reimagining their identity for 2026.

For the task, the distillery found 16-year-old barrels from its Camp Nelson F, D and E rickhouses. Notably, these have bypassed the standard chill filtering process, leading to a richer mouthfeel and a bolder flavor profile that you may have found decades ago.

Bottled at a hot 120 proof (60% ABV), the bourbon features that “signature funk” of yore while also coming with a range of tasting notes like clove, dark honey, cherry cola, dark fruit and brown sugar.

Wild Turkey has shown in recent years that it can do exceptional things with higher age statements, as seen with certain Master’s Keep releases and, especially, its Russell’s Reserve sub-brand. There’s almost zero chance this 16-year release will be anything but exceptional.

Availability and pricing

There’s no word on exactly how limited this bottling will be but you can expect they might be difficult to find when they start rolling out. Priced at $400, the Gold Foil Edition will be available in select markets in the coming weeks.
