From the Barrel isn’t your average blended whisky.

First of all, the entire expression comes from Nikka’s own facilities, which already gives the whisky a singular identity.

Combining liquid from the legendary whisky maker’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, the marriage typically combines both malt and grain whiskies for a three-month period.

From the Barrel is also bottled at a 102.8 proof (51.4% ABV), higher than your typical blend, resulting in deeper tasting notes of vanilla, orange peel and oak.

Here comes the barrel

For the expression’s 40th anniversary last year, Nikka announced a special edition of From the Barrel called “Extra Marriage,” keeping the same 51.4% ABV but enhancing the profile by doubling the amount of time the two separate liquids meet (six months instead of three).

Continuing the celebrations, From the Barrel Extra Marriage will now be released alongside a three-bottle Gift Set that includes a 500mL bottle of the standard expression, as well as individual 500mL bottles of the malt (Malt Pieces of the Barrel) and grain (Grain Pieces of the Barrel) whiskies.

Each will be bottled at 58% ABV (116 proof) and limited to just 800 sets.

Widely believed to be corn-based, the grain bottling exhibits a nose of banana cake and marmalade that gives way to a sweet and rich character you might find in American whiskeys.

Meanwhile, the malt expression combines vanilla, apricot jam, and chocolate cake on the nose before offering fruit and soft peat notes on the palate.

As for the Extra Marriage Gift Set, the trio will be released this month with an MSRP of $400, but you can expect that to increase on the secondary market once the 800 units are all gone.
