It’s been a long time coming, but nearly a decade after its introduction, the Tudor Black Bay Chrono is getting a smaller, streamlined case.

Following in the footsteps of its older brother, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight diver, Tudor’s bicompax chronograph is now available in a 39mm case. On top of that, it cuts a slimmer profile and makes one hell of an entrance with the new “Bumblebee” color scheme.

Two millimeters doesn’t sound like much, but it slides the Black Bay Chrono into the “Goldilocks” zone that watch enthusiasts are constantly searching for. As thoroughly proven by the Fifty-Eight, the new case size is infinitely wearable and looks good on any size wrist.

The relatively tidy dial, which doesn’t deviate much from its dive watch progeny, scales down well. In fact, you would have to see it right next to the existing 41mm design to notice the slightly tightened-up spacing.

The Black Bay Chrono 39 dial is nearly identical to its 41mm predecessor, just slightly tightened up.

You still have Tudor’s signature snowflake handset with a red-tipped arrow chronograph seconds hand. The dashes in the classic triangle-dot-dash hour markers are removed to make room for the sunken subdials and a chamfered 6:00 date window.

The dial is still capped with a domed sapphire crystal and framed by a fixed polished steel bezel with a black anodized aluminum insert.

A fine line

The Black Bay Chrono 39 is also a bit thinner than its predecessor. While the case shape is nearly identical, it is 1.4mm shorter, bringing the new height to 13.1 mm.

This update to the stainless steel case comes with the familiar finishing, featuring satin brushing on the top, contrasted by polished sides and chamfered edges. It has the same screw-down crown, signed with the Tudor shield, and screw-down pushers, ensuring 200m water resistance.

Sweet like honey

Of course, it’s hard to even notice the new case size when it’s housing the new “Bumblebee” dial motif. The bright yellow color was chosen to maximize legibility through contrast.

The sunken white-on-black subdials, containing a 45-minute totalizer at 3:00 and a small seconds at 9:00, are also updated with a snailed texture.

One interesting detail Tudor hasn’t addressed is that the Black Bay Chrono 39 runs on the same Caliber MT5813 automatic movement as the 41mm version, without sacrificing water resistance.

This either means the Black Bay Chrono could have been 39mm all along or that Tudor achieved this new size through some undisclosed engineering. Or, it could have simply been a design choice.

Availability and pricing

Regardless of how Tudor ended up producing the Black Bay Chrono 39, it is a welcome and unmissable sight. The “Bumblebee” dial fits right in with the pink and “Flamingo Blue” dials added to the 41mm chronograph collection over the past couple of years.

However, the new proportions are sure to be the real headline for Tudor fans. I’m sure more traditional color schemes, like the panda and reverse panda used for the 41mm Black Bay Chrono, will come along soon enough.

The Tudor Black Bay Chrono 39 “Bumblebee” is available now from Tudor for $6,725. It is only available on a satin-brushed three-link steel bracelet with a “T-fit” sliding rapid adjustment clasp.
