New Balance Rainier Remastered

An updated classic, this full-grain leather hiking boot was made for serious mountaineering, but it’s suitable for street use as well.

The Rainier Boot’s roots can be traced back to 1975, when mountaineering legend Lou Whittaker avoided toe amputation on K2 by descending 10,000 feet in a pair of tennis shoes. His forced innovation gave him an idea for a lighter mountaineering shoe, to be worn until bulky ice boots were actually needed on the mountain. In 2016, his creation, the Rainier Boot, got a remake. The Rainier Remastered is lightweight but supportive, with a breathable full-grain leather and nylon mesh upper and a rugged Vibram sole for rocky terrain. A Gore-Tex liner has been added to keep those feet dry wherever your adventures take you. And in case you were wondering, Whittaker loves the new boots — we asked him.
