The Naim Mu-so 2 is one of my favorite speakers I’ve tested in recent years. It’s a beautiful wireless speaker — think a higher-end Sonos — but the coolest thing about it is its volume knob. It’s huge, lights up and has an integrated touchscreen for quickly starting up playlists.

Basically, the Mu-So 2 is a wireless speaker that draws you in and invites you to touch it, which is quite different from the vast majority of today’s wireless speakers, most of which tend to blend into the home rather than stand out.

Fast forward to today and there’s a new Mu-so wireless speaker being released called the Mu-so Hekla. It’s essentially a bigger, better-sounding, and more versatile version of the Mu-so 2.

A French and British hi-fi collab

Let’s get the confusing thing out of the way — the Mu-so Hekla is a Focal-branded Mu-so speaker. Not Naim.

You see, Focal (a French company specializing in really high-end loudspeakers) and Naim (a British audio company best known for its beautiful streaming amplifiers) are sister brands. And they frequently collaborate, combining Focal’s loudspeaker expertise with Naim’s amplification and streaming know-how. And that’s the case here.

It’s a little unclear why this is a Focal speaker and not a Naim speaker, but that’s the way it is.

The Mu-so Hekla looks and works similarly to previous Mu-sos. It has a rectangular design that’s crafted from brushed anodized aluminum. It has a black fabric grille, which you can remove to show off the various speaker drivers.

And most notably, it features the signature volume knob that is synonymous with Mu-so speakers. (Fun fact: thanks to built-in motion sensors, the volume dial lights up when it detects that your hand is about to touch it.)

There are 15 total speaker drivers: seven on the front, two on each side, and four on the top that fire upwards.

15 drivers, 660 watts

Obviously, the Mu-so Hekla is bigger than other Mu-sos. The wireless speaker stretches over three feet across and weighs roughly 34 pounds. It’s quite the behemoth.

Inside, the speaker packs 15 total drivers — seven on the front, two on each side, and four up-firing drivers on the top — which are powered by 15 amplifiers. In all, the system delivers up to 660 watts of power.

Aside from size, the big difference between the Mu-so Hekla and other Mu-so speakers is that it has up-firing drivers and supports Dolby Atmos.

So while other smaller Mu-so speakers (specifically, the Mu-so 2) can technically double as a soundbar for your TV, the Mu-so Hekla is really optimized for it.

Speaker, soundbar or both?

The other neat thing about the Mu-so Hekla is that it comes with a suite of customizable audio modes that allow you to adjust the sound — from true stereo to immersive spatial audio — depending on what you’re listening to or how you’re using it (as a wireless speaker for streaming or soundbar playing TV audio).

According to the brand, the Mu-so Hekla “sets the benchmark for all-in-one systems, delivering true high-fidelity performance with effortless simplicity, whether for music or home cinema.”

Naturally, the Mu-so Hekla supports a wide range of streaming services, including AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, and Tidal Connect and Bluetooth. And it can be grouped with other Focal or Naim wireless streamers in a multi-room audio system.

The speaker supports wired sources (such as a CD or Blu-ray player) thanks to an optical Toslink input. It obviously has HDMI eARC input for hooking up to your TV, too.

Price and availability

The Focal Mu-so Hekla will cost $3,600.

The speaker is technically available now, but only in South Korea and China. It will be officially released in the States sometime in Q1 of 2026.
