Sonos makes hi-fi easy. But there’s always room for crisper highs, more accurate vocals and deeper bass, especially when it comes to building out a respectable home theater.

That’s why some Sonos shoppers don’t stop at small speakers and soundbars, eventually upgrading to the final puzzle piece of the setup: the sub.

Though a Sonos subwoofer can be prohibitively expensive for entry-level shoppers, those that upgrade to the specialist speaker (yes, subwoofers are types of speakers) rarely look back.

Subwoofers, like those made by Sonos, shoulder the burden of producing bass and thus allow other components to focus on mid- and high-end frequencies.

Subwoofers shoulder the burden of producing bass, leaving one’s other components to focus on the high- and mid-range frequencies. The result: better overall sound at every level of a rig.

Sonos has dabbled in subwoofers for over a decade, culminating in the release of the Sub 4 in late 2024.

But for listeners looking for a deal, Costco is selling the previous generation at a price that competes with the refurbished version listed on the brand’s own website.

How do the Sub 3 and Sub 4 compare?

From afar, both the Sub 3 and Sub 4 actually look, and function, similarly, featuring two inward-facing force-canceling drivers to minimize distortion.

The Sub 4 features increased processing power, more memory and new Wi-Fi radios, however, the changes mostly affect its ability to connect to a larger ecosystem, not its sound.

The Sub 4 (pictured), released in 2024, brought internal changes to Sonos’s subwoofer line but the sound is virtually identical to the Sub 3.

Importantly, the Sub 4 is only compatible with Sonos’s newer speakers and soundbars. In other words, the Sub 3 is actually the optimal choice for anyone with a Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2) or Ikea Symfonisk speaker.

The best part, of course, is that the Sub 3 is significantly cheaper, too.

Thanks to Costco’s current deal, the Sonos Sub 3 is going for $500 — a $300 discount compared to its previous MSRP. The Sub 4, meanwhile, retails for $899 at full price.

How’s that sound?
