The Technics SL-1200 is one of the most iconic turntables of all time. Released in the early 1970s, it was a direct-drive turntable that became beloved by DJs thanks to its reliable speed and stability, its suitability for both playback and mixing, and the fact that it was built like a tank.

Fast forward to the present day, and the revered Japanese hi-fi manufacturer makes numerous different turntables in the SL-1200’s likeness. Of those so-called “spiritual successors,” the 2021-released SL-1200MK7 is the most affordable. It costs $1,300.

And now, Technics has partnered with the fashion and lifestyle brand Aimé Leon Dore to create a special-edition version of the SL-1200MK7 turntable.

Let’s get something straight: the Technics SL-1200M7ALD isn’t a better turntable than the classic SL-1200MK7. In fact, the two are exactly the same.

The Technics SL-1200M7ALD features the same coreless direct-drive motor, S-shaped aluminum tonearm and vibration-dampening platter. According to the brand, it’s “suited for both dedicated record listening and the demands of real DJ performance.”

Mulberry Green, gold accents

But like most Technics turntables, the company only sells the SL-1200MK7 in silver or black finishes. Now, with the SL-1200M7ALD, you can get it in Aimé Leon Dore’s signature color, Mulberry Green, and with bespoke gold detailing.

Additionally, the turntable ships with a slip mat that’s co-branded with the logos of both Technics and Aimé Leon Dore.

Availability and pricing

The Technics SL-1200M7ALD is a special-edition version that will only be sold in “limited quantities.” It’s available exclusively from Aimé Leon Dore’s website.

The turntable costs $2,100, making it significantly more expensive than Technics SL-1200MK7, which is exactly the same (save for aesthetics) and costs $1,300.

The Technics SL-1200M7ALD is a special-edition version of the company’s SL-1200MK7 direct-drive turntable, which was released in 2021 and costs $1,300. It’s identical in every way (same coreless direct-drive motor, S-shaped aluminum tonearm and vibration-dampening platter), but, as it’s a collaboration with Aimé Leon Dore, it dons the fashion brand’s signature Mulberry Green finish, along with bespoke gold detailing.
