Technics released its SL-1500C direct-drive turntable back in 2019, and it has proven extremely popular for its premium build, plug-and-play design (thanks to a built-in phono preamp), and excellent audio quality. The fact that it’s not widely expensive has been a big factor, too.

Now, the revered Japanese hi-fi company has introduced an updated version of that popular turntable, promising significantly improved performance without an increase in price. That’s right, this new model costs the same as its predecessor.

The Technics SL-1500CS is the new model — the “S” at the end gives it away — and, for the most part, it’s quite similar to the SL-1500C.

Both are basically identical direct-drive turntables that come with an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge (which costs $109 on its own) and a switchable phono preamplifier. If you have a set of powered speakers or a traditional hi-fi system, it’s essentially ready to rock right out of the box.

The ΔΣ (DeltaSigma) Drive technology promises to help it eliminate vibrations and play more accurate audio than its predecessor, the 2019-released SL-1500C.

Motor upgrade, trickle-down tech

The big upgrade with the SL-1500CS is its higher-end direct-drive motor, integrated with Technics’ ΔΣ (DeltaSigma) Drive technology.

This is the same vibration-eliminating technology that Technics first introduced in its more expensive turntables, the 2023-released SL-1200GR2/1210GR2 ($2,500), as well as the 2024-released SL-13000G ($4,000).

In the press release, Technics explains that the ΔΣ-Drive technology is designed to eliminate motor vibrations to the very limits of what is measurable. As a result, the new SL-1500CS “achieves sonic performance levels far beyond the perceived standards of its class.”

The SL-1500CS is now the most affordable Technics turntable to feature such technology.

Complementary finish

Aside from the more advanced motor, the SL-1500CS retains pretty much everything that was great about the previous SL-1500C. It has an aluminium die-cast chassis and a static-balance universal S-shape tonearm.

It’s also technically a semi-automatic turntable, as the tonearm automatically lifts and returns to its resting position when the record finishes. This way, you don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn the turntable off.

The aluminum die-cast chassis is integrated with a special, highly rigid material (consisting of ABS mixed with glass fiber) to achieve a two-layer construction.

The other new thing about the SL-1500CS is that it comes in a new metallic grey finish, which is significantly darker than the silver finish of its predecessor.

Technics claims this new finish helps the turntable complement both black and silver audio components.

Availability and pricing

The new SL-1500CS turntable will be available from March 2026 via authorized Technics retailers.

It’s expected to cost $1,500, the same as the SL-1500C.

Technics SL-1500CS

The Technics SL-1500CS is a direct-drive turntable with a built-in phono preamplifier. It’s essentially an updated version of the SL-1500C, which was released in 2019. The SL-1500CS looks nearly identical and even comes equipped with the same Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. But the new model has been upgraded with Technics’ ΔΣ (DeltaSigma) Drive technology, which it also featured in its more expensive turntables, the 2023-released SL-1200GR2/1210GR2 ($2,500), as well as the 2024-released SL-13000G ($4,000). According to the brand, the new SL-1500CS “achieves sonic performance levels far beyond the perceived standards of its class.”
