A Prestigious Hi-Fi Brand Just Reimagined Its Classic Audiophile Loudspeakers

Tidal Audio is a German manufacturer of ultra-high-end audio equipment and loudspeakers. Just how ultra? Well, many of its loudspeaker offerings cost more than most homes, with its flagship models, the La Assoluta, priced at a cool $625,000/pair.

Founded in 1999, the company now offers numerous models of these ultra-elite loudspeakers … and has just introduced a new one: the Piano Classic. And while still extremely expensive, they’re actually the brand’s most affordable loudspeakers to date.

Tidal Audio claims that the Piano Classic is a “reinterpretation” of the brand’s original loudspeakers, the 1999-released Piano, as it has the same basic construction and is built with the same design principles. However, it’s been upgraded with new tech and materials.

For context: Tidal introduced the third generation of its original Piano loudspeakers, the Piano G3, in 2022. And it still sells those loudspeakers today. A pair costs $64,000.

The all-new Piano Classic is being positioned as an even more affordable alternative.

The Piano Classic is a pair of passive floorstanding loudspeakers with a 2.5-way design, just like the original Piano. And while it’s built in the same ethos as its predecessor, Tidal Audio has omitted many of the exotic materials that it typically uses to keep the price down.

As for drivers, each speaker packs a single 1.2-inch black-ceramic tweeter that’s mechanically decoupled from the cabinet. They’re paired with two 7-inch black Crystalid woofers: One handles the midrange and bass, the other focuses exclusively on the low end.

Each of these has been custom-built by Accuton, a fellow German hi-fi manufacturer that specializes in loudspeaker drivers.

Additionally, the Piano Classic loudspeakers have been integrated with a super-advanced passive crossover network (which the brand calls Uno-Pulse), which is hermetically sealed in its own separate chamber and features ultra-low-tolerance components.

For a little more context, each Piano Classic loudspeaker weighs 120 pounds, and the passive crossover network weighs 28 pounds per loudspeaker.

On the back of each Piano Classic loudspeaker are Vario-terminals that support three different setups: pure 2-way (for very small rooms), linear 2.5-way (for medium sized rooms), gained 2.5-way (for bigger rooms or more bass in medium sized rooms).

According to the brand, the Piano Classic “comes with the DNA fingerprint of what Tidal is all about: building timeless masterpieces with the unique, crystal clear, and naturally pure sound.”

Availability and pricing

The Piano Classic might be the brand’s most affordable loudspeakers to date, but, as you may have surmised, they’re still far from cheap. A pair costs $31,990.

As the name gives away, the Piano Classic comes in one color finish: midnight black piano lacquer. They’re available to order now on the company’s website.
