Gear is our job. It streams into and out of our offices in an endless tide of boxes and couriers; it gets photographed and catalogued and crammed underneath desks until we have time to test it. We quantify it as best we can, to share its essence: good and bad, peccadilloes and superlatives. We even pick the 100 best pieces of gear every year. But to close things out this year, we asked each staff member to single out their favorite piece of gear that was new to 2015. We hope you enjoy our little love notes to the gear that made the biggest impact on our lives this year.
I admittedly don’t get to golf as much as I used to. Back in college, and even before that, I would play over 20 rounds a year. Now, with my roots firmly spread in Manhattan, I manage less than a third of that. But that doesn’t mean I can’t express joy at wearing $300 golf shoes. My game hasn’t necessarily improved since I got my feet in these Asyms, which Adidas Golf unveiled just after the Masters. But it hasn’t gotten worse. And every time I wear them, I remember that these were the shoes I was wearing when I shook the hand of Jason Day — who afterward went on to win the PGA Championship. I like to think that I, and these Asyms, had something to do with his success.
