America’s Best Full-Size SUV Gets Even Better with a Fresh Face and Is the First with EREV Power

As expected, the Wagoneer is no more. It’s just Grand Wagoneer from hereon out.

After many teasers, Jeep’s refreshed flagship SUV, the Grand Wagoneer, is officially here. The company pulled the digital wraps off the model for the world to see, after an initial rocky start.

When the Auburn Hills automaker revitalized its iconic Wagoneer in 2022, it quickly rose to the top of its game. Not only did offer an exquisite driving experience that’s eons better than its rivals.

It also brought back a model that fans so desperately clamored for. However, it wasn’t without its growing pains.

For instance, the Wagoneer range was woefully confusing, with two different models: the former and the fancier Grand Wagoneer. Then, there were some other confusion nomenclature theming, including the terms “Series III” and other odd designations.

Jeep’s refresh of the model addresses these most pressing criticisms. It also adds more to the mix, including the first-ever extended-range electric variant — for both the model and the segment.

While the model range rebrand is huge, the biggest news is the arrival of the Grand Wagoneer REEV (range-extended electric vehicle). It’s basically an EREV variant of the SUV, except Jeep’s marketing team decided to be all contrarian and rework the abbreviation.

(For the record, “EREV” or “Extended Range Electric Vehicle” is the generic term, while “REEV,” or “Range-Extended Electric Vehicle,” is just Jeep’s own take on the term. Both are precisely the same thing.)

As a refresher, an EREV is essentially an all-electric vehicle, where electric motors powered by a massive battery pack drive the wheels. However, instead of relying solely on the battery pack, an EREV also sports a gas-powered internal combustion engine.

The purpose of the ICE engine is to act as an auxiliary power unit to help recharge the massive drive battery pack on the fly. Its sole purpose: to extend overall EV driving range, especially in a pinch.

The ICE engine in an EREV has absolutely no role in driving the wheels. Rather, it not only helps recharge the battery on the go. It also provides extra electricity under heavy throttle loads.

The Grand Wagoneer REEV utilize the same platform as the inbound Ramcharger pickup truck, which makes sense since the Grand Wagoneer utilizes the Ram 1500 platform as a whole.

Like the Ramcharger, the Grand Wagoneer’s ICE-based auxiliary power unit is a conventional 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. But it’s been detuned and specifically modified to perform as an efficient range-extending power unit.

The results are quite impressive: 647 total system horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque. That translates to enough power to motivate the Grand Wagoneer REEV from 0-60mph in just five seconds flat with a total range of over 500 miles.

Despite the announcement of the REEV model, Jeep says it won’t be available until later in 2026.

Separating the old Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models from the new one is a reworked front-end design. We received a glimpse at the new appearance with a teaser picture a few models back.

Now, we get to see it from multiple angles. The overall Wagoneer’s shape remains, which is par the course for a midlife refresh.

The revised Grand Wagoneer benefits from completely new headlight designs, a reworked grille that’s reminiscent of the one found on the all-electric Wagoneer S, new wheel designs and a new color palette.

Other key details include the omission of chrome trimming, a move Jeep’s team says is more environmentally conscientious. And that’s because the production of any chrome metal is a highly toxic process.

But more so, a new all-terrain Upland trim joins the pack. Loosely inspired by the limited-production Overland Edition from the outgoing Wagoneer, the Upland starts life as a second-to-top Limited trim. It then standardizes the McIntosh stereo upgrade, adds power retractable side-steps, a heads-up display, the tri-pane moonroof and the black appearance package.

Otherwise, underneath, all standard ICE-powered Grand Wagoneers still utilize Stellantis’ latest 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged Hurricane inline-six. Power is still rated at 420 hp and 468 lb-ft with all of it going to the wheels through the usual ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic.

Should the new Grand Wagoneer interest you, prices start at $64,740, including destination shipping. On the top end of the range, a fully-loaded long-boi Summit Obsidian stamps its invoice at $98,985.
