The J100 Series Land Cruiser predates the current generation, but don't hold that against it. It’s one of the best-looking SUVs in the Land Cruiser’s storied lineage, and one of the most off-road capable; it was the first to get a V8, as well. It’s also the one you may be most likely to encounter in the wilds of Nantucket or Aspen, as very few people by the current model (which may be the last we get in America as a result).
But if you're looking for a J100 Series to convert into the ultimate overlander, a ready-made one has just popped up for auction on Bring a Trailer. It’s a 1998 J100 Land Cruiser with 135,000 miles, mostly in California. So, in Land Cruiser terms, it still has a long life left ahead of it.
This Land Cruiser has substantial exterior off-road modifications, including a suspension lift and Dissent off-road front and rear bumpers. Inside, it received a Goose Gear rear seat delete, removing two of the three second-row seats. The extra room accommodates a camp kitchen, an ARB refrigerator, and a tailgate storage compartment; all three are included in the sale. Also included is a Cascadia rooftop tent. That’s pretty much everything you need but for some essential overloading gear.
It’s not in mint condition. The Land Cruiser has a few dings and dents on the exterior and some interior wear. But you can mark those imperfections down as accrued character marks for the rare luxury off-roader that has had an owner use it as intended.
Bidding for the 1998 J100 Land Cruiser is already up to $11,000. And with six days left for the auction, expect that number to rise.
