We stopped by Classic Car Club Manhattan to attend the live reveal of an all-new “SUT” — a sport utility truck — that’s significant for many reasons. Robert Bollinger, CEO and creator, nervously strolled onto the stage, beaming, to introduce his 40-year old dream-made-real: the Bollinger B1 SUT. It’s a no-frills, almost industrial-looking take on the 4×4. The body panels, painted in matte “Gunhouse” Grey, are fastened to an aluminum architecture with exposed high-strength machine screws. The interior — which fits four adults or, when rear seats are removed, swallows 95 cubic feet of gear — features charging outlets galore and not much else. The 56-degree approach angle, 10 inches of wheel travel and 15.5 inches of ground clearance are impressive, as are the huge and gnarly Mud Terrain tires and 11.75-inch vented inboard disc brakes. That it’ll tow or haul 6,100 pounds is crazy.
But the craziest part is that the B1 is all-electric. Boasting 360 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque and a 120- or 200-mile range thanks to its dual-motor setup, this rock-crawling, mud-hungry truck will also top out at 127 miles per hour and reach 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds. The battery placement makes for a flat load floor that features a 13″ x 14″ front-to-back pass through that will fit 24 sticks of 2x4s; the rear area can handle 72 sheets of plywood. The roof comes off. There’s a “frunk.” The B1 is aimed at off-roading enthusiasts and “ranchers, builders and do-it-yourselfers” alike, a thoroughly modern take on the classic vehicle we all aspire to own.
