This Immersive Japanese Retreat Is the Ultimate Experience for Toyota Land Cruiser Lovers

A unique travel opportunity gives JDM enthusiasts a chance to drive newly purchased Toyota imports on their home turf.

Whether it’s new or simply new to you, buying a car is a special moment. Moreover, if the vehicle has any kind of enthusiast appeal, it can be an incredibly emotional purchase.

For these reasons, many brands offer bespoke experiences to make the occasion more memorable. Chevrolet does so by allowing buyers to take delivery of a new Corvette at the museum in Bowling Green, while brands like Lamborghini and McLaren each offer tailor-made handovers at their respective factories.

As unforgettable as those opportunities have to be (and as much as I’d love to arrange for such a thing myself), Toyota Land Cruiser specialist Flex Motor may have just cooked up something even better.

A trip for true Toyota fans

Flex is calling it the Japan Delivery Experience, and it’s an opportunity the outfit is framing as a “pilgrimage for Land Cruiser lovers.” I’d consider that a pretty apt description — it most certainly caters to diehard brand loyalists.

The envisioned trip spans about six days, but interested travelers can extend or shorten that period according to their preferences.

That’s because it’s a comprehensive travel package wherein new owners fly to Japan to drive their freshly purchased JDM Toyotas before they’re exported. Instead of waiting months to see their Land Cruisers in the metal for the first time, Flex buyers can get acquainted with the vehicles on their home turf.

Beyond facilitating some unique memories, it offers a great way to gain a deeper understanding of one’s rig. Following a night spent in Tokyo, owners then take delivery of their Land Cruisers in Folkwood Village for a series of drives to Nagoya to visit the Toyota museum and the Flex factory.

Having had a few days to learn and log some miles, guests then fly to Hokkaido for some additional outdoor exploration. During this portion of the trip, Flex provides an overlanding-ready Hiace camper van rental, and the available nature activities in Tokachi can include everything from mountain stream fishing to wild vegetable foraging, depending on the season.

While Flex’s provided itinerary spans a period of five to six days, the outfit is careful to point out that it can be catered according to one’s tastes and preferences. Be it for more time driving, exploring or simply being outside, the trip can be shortened, extended or rerouted entirely.

Original and revived options

If you’re not already familiar with Flex, it’s worth window shopping when you have some time to kill. The outfit offers a series of refreshed Land Cruisers called Renocas (a portmanteau of renovation and car), as well as some tasty JDM imports.

In the case of the former, you’re effectively getting a restored 80 Series that’s been styled to look like an older FJ60. If trucks are more your thing, Flex also provides the Tacoma with a similar treatment.

With six cylinders and V8s available on the power front, Flex’s conversions are made only better by the variety of retro-inspired color schemes and aesthetic treatments. Nevertheless, for some, there’s no replacement for originality.

Thankfully, the outfit is well-versed in bringing Land Cruisers to the United States. Though availability varies depending on market conditions, Flex cites a 70 Series, an 80 Series and even a Prado as examples of eligible options.

Availability and pricing

It’s worth noting that Flex’s Japan Delivery Experience is only available to those who have purchased a JDM Land Cruiser.

Pricing for the trip starts at 2,700,000 JPY (~$17,485) for two attendees, and it includes lodging, breakfast and dinner, participation in activities, vehicle access and internal travel. Buyers are responsible for travel to and from Tokyo.
