Jeep’s Most Powerful Wrangler Gets a Rugged Military-Inspired Makeover That’s Packed with Heritage

Just a little over a month ago, Fox Factory announced its entrance into the street truck wars with the Ram 1500 Lowered, a performance-tuned take on Auburn Hills’ iconic light-duty half-ton pickup.

Not content to settle there, the suspension and tuning outfit is already back with another tricked-out four-wheeled creation. This time,  however, it comes from another brand under the Stellantis umbrella: Jeep.

Dressed for the job

It’s called the Commando, and it makes for a heavily revised take on the Jeep brand’s four-door Wrangler 392. Limited to just 250 units in total, it’s only available to active military and veterans.

Fox Factory created the vehicle in celebration of Veterans’ Day this year, and it packed the 4×4 full of heritage appeal — between its equipment and its order process, it’s a release that takes the military-inspired treatment to the next level.

Around the outside, Fox Factory has outfitted the Commando with a set of tube doors and a bimini top, as well as some high-top fender flares, a grille guard and a set of auxiliary LED lights.

Of course, all of this is standard fare for many off-road builds nowadays. As a callback to its Willy’s heritage, the Wrangler also benefits from the brand’s ‘41 Olive Drab paint, a unique graphics package and some 17” beadlock wheels painted in Ivory White to give it a look that’s classic Jeep and obviously military.

With the spare mounted in the rear and the assortment of color-matched accents, it’s a look that gives the Wrangler an undeniably rugged cool — especially riding on those 37″ Nitto Mud Terrain tires.

A powerful asset

While some military-inspired packages can be of the  “all show and no go” variety, such is not the case with Fox Factory’s Commando.

Quite the contrary, in fact. Being based on the Jeep Wrangler 392, it sports a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 under the hood. When mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox, it puts down an authoritative 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

Now, assuming that’s not enough for you, Fox Factory also offers an optional Whipple supercharger that can boost output up to 705 horsepower and 655 lb-ft of torque. Though it’s not a cheap upgrade at over $11,000, it’s a small price to pay for that kind of power in a Jeep.

For this reason, the Commando doesn’t ride on just any old suspension setup. Rather, Fox Factory has overhauled the Jeep with a JKS 3.5″ Performance Lift Suspension System, some of its FOX 3.0 Internal Bypass Shocks, as well as a ​FOX ATS Steering Stabilizer.

Altogether, it makes for a robust upgrade package, so you’d think that it would bring a pretty hefty asking price — especially considering the Jeep 392’s nearly six-figure tag.

Pricing and availability

However, that’s where you’d be wrong. Fox Factory is pricing its Commando package from just $69,995, which makes for a significant discount compared to the stock V8 Wrangler.

Of course, as previously mentioned, you’ll need to be active military or a veteran in order to qualify for purchase. However, it’s partly for this reason that this project is so cool — one lone example has been allocated for auction, and all proceeds will go towards supporting the USO.
