Cast iron cookware isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s heavy, requires regular maintenance and takes a long time to heat.

Well, most examples, anyway.

The new No.5 Cast Iron Chef Skillet from Field Company, the brand’s first new pan in years, bucks the trend with a design that’s as high on convenience as it is in heat retention.

Clocking in at just 2.2 pounds (30 percent less than a comparable Lodge skillet), the No.5 Cast Iron Chef Skillet measures 7.5 inches and features an extra-long raised handle that supports one-handed movements.

There are also curved, spatula-friendly sidewalls for fried eggs, French omelettes, sauces and simple sauté jobs.

Of course, Field Company is far from the first cast iron manufacturer to come up with this design, often called a chef skillet.

Curved slopes make it the ideal pan for eggs and French omelettes.

But its lightweight design, buttery smooth cooking surface and relatively affordable price tag compared to the competition make it a compelling choice for special occasions and everyday cooking, alike.
