It’s nearly impossible to capture lighting in a bottle twice, especially in the whisky industry. But that’s exactly what the Macallan has set out to do.

Admittedly, the Scotch maker knows its latest Romantica Collection won’t precisely recreate the magic of its legendary 1926 cask release from 1986. Of the most expensive whiskies ever sold at auction, the 60-year-old single malt occupies the top seven spots, including the record-breaking sale of around $2.7 million in 2023.

However, the spirit of this series lives on with a new three-bottle set.

A legacy worth noting

Anyone who’s ever tasted a single malt from the Macallan knows that it’s not your ordinary Scotch. It’s the paragon of what Scotch should be. For the past 200 years, the Speyside distillery has garnered a reputation for luxury and consistency.

Its 1926 vintage was still a special case. Distilled before the Great Depression and 2nd World War, this whisky represented a bygone era when production was lower and cask sourcing was more traditional. The sherry transport casks used back then held real wine from Spain. Today, casks are manufactured, often seasoned, specifically for whisky aging.

Most importantly, the single malt’s 60-year age statement was nearly unheard of in 1986, when premium whiskies usually capped out at 25 years at the high end. The release cemented the Macallan as a luxury brand, which only increased from there.

And then there was the rarity of the collection. Only 40 bottles of this original set were made in total. To distinguish the whisky as collectible works of art, the Macallan had four different labels produced. 12 were designed by renowned Italian painter Valerio Adami, while another 12 were designed by Sir Peter Blake (known mostly for co-creating the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album cover).

There was also a one-off bottle hand-painted by bespoke muralist Michael Dillon. The rest of the set had a standard “Fine & Rare” label.

Now, the Macallan has reunited these three artists to celebrate the 100th anniversary of that 1926 distilling.

Centenary single malt

Limited to 286 bottles, the Romantica Collection won’t be as rare as the 1986 release but it serves as a proper celebration of the most coveted spirit ever.

Inside the bottle is an exceptional 39-year single malt distilled the year the previous bottling was released.

Coming from a single cask that was distilled the same year the previous expression was bottled, the single malt has been aged for nearly 40 years (39 years and four months to be exact) at the Macallan Estate before it was bottled at 48.6% ABV. For anyone lucky enough to taste the liquid, you’ll experience a palate of “brown sugar, glazed peach and tropical lychee” along with “dark cherries, treacle and a subtle hint of peat.” The long finish exhibits notes of dried fruit, leather and cacao.

Art before the whisky

Created exclusively for this release, the art itself is notable in its own right. Blake’s piece, dubbed The Music Room, honors the Easter Elchies House, which was the first distillery site of the Macallan and can be seen on every bottle from the brand. We’re transported to 1986, the year the Octagon Room was completed. This music room has served as a central gathering room over the years.

Adami’s work Romantica (1986) portrays Janet “Nettie” Harbinson, the brand custodian who laid down the iconic casks back in 1926. Depicted in a pop art style, she’s wearing a red dress, standing against a Scottish hillside at night. Meanwhile, Dillon’s piece, simply titled The Macallan Estate, shows us the modern-day distillery site with some wildlife along the River Spey.

Each artist’s work will cover 86 bottles, each hand-signed by the artist himself. The bottles themselves come in bespoke boxes made of European oak featuring the respective art on the bottle. It also includes a limited-edition giclée print of the art.

Availability and pricing

Sold as a complete set of three, the Romantica Collection can be purchased directly from the Macallan on July 30 for $105,000. Individual bottles should pop up on the secondary market, but don’t expect them to be affordable.
