New Balance has no shortage of tasteful sneakers to choose from, but the relatively new 204L model has already carved out a large fan base of its own, even among NB’s heritage styles.

That’s thanks to its appealing mix of a thin, retro-inspired midsole and textured, layered upper influenced by the tech-y performance uppers of the Y2K era.

The result of a collaboration with contemporary Japanese apparel brand Auralee, the New Balance x Auralee 204L embraces the minimalism and emphasis on tailoring that made Auralee a star in its own right.

The 204L’s distinctive outsole, with its 2000s-inspired strike path and ’70s-influenced tread pattern, remains on the updated silhouette along with the double-stacked “N” logo, EVA midsole and rubber outsole.
