When tablet computers were first popularized, there was a lot of hype about how they would revolutionize and even replace traditional handwriting. However, the experience turned out to be less than ideal, and most users abandoned the concept.

I believe that was largely due to the difficult-to-translate experience of writing by hand. Tablets feel awkward and smooth, whereas traditional paper and pen are more tactile and substantial.

Now, that gap may have finally been narrowed enough to make an impact. If it delivers on its promise, Montblanc’s Digital Writing could finally bridge traditional handwriting and digital tablets.

Welcome to Moonshots: A series exploring the big ideas that could reshape the future of products. Discover more here.

The notebook, reinvented

It makes sense that Montblanc, the world’s most iconic pen brand, would attempt such a venture. It also makes sense that it would get it right in a way that tech companies couldn’t, as the brand came at the problem from the other end.

So what makes this tablet different from others before it? For starters, the brand paid close attention to the act of writing itself. To that end, Montblanc has tried to replicate the feel and texture of genuine paper, opting for a more tactile experience.

Interestingly, the experience has more to do with the included Digital Pen. It includes three swappable tips — Linen, Matte and Smooth — all designed especially to mimic different kinds of paper.

Even more critically, the pen itself was designed to mimic the brand’s most iconic pen, the Meisterstück. That means it’s beautiful, perfectly balanced and simple to use, boasting just two controls: a tool switch and a top button.

The revolution will be digitized

The writing experience is only part of the story. Just as crucial is the onboard tech. Of course, Montblanc left no stone unturned.

You have multiple means of writing at your disposal. That includes starting from scratch with a completely blank page — perfect for brainstorming, sketching and doodling — as well as annotating existing documents (just upload them to the device and mark them up as needed).

The Digital Paper also has a ton of preloaded templates, so you can pick whatever suits your needs, be it a calendar, checklist, travel journal or whatever else. It also has an easy-to-use search function, so you can find documents you’ve already worked on.

You can even use the Digital Paper to share documents with friends, family and colleagues with just the tap of a button. And you can upload your docs to the cloud for easier sharing and moving between devices.

Can Montblanc’s new venture succeed where others have failed? That remains to be seen.
