The Internet’s Favorite Waxed Canvas Jacket Comes as a Must-Have Kitchen Accessory

Turns out, waxed canvas is also great at repelling food stains.

Built on the viral success of its Blanket Lined Waxed Trucker, Flint and Tinder has quietly created one of the most robust assortments of waxed canvas jackets and apparel on the internet.

Even with so much excellent outerwear to choose from — my personal favorite is the James Waxed Snap Jacket — the argument can be made that a particular accessory is the most useful waxed canvas item the brand makes, especially if you’re handy in the kitchen.

The Flint and Tinder Waxed Apron is a must-have accessory for anyone who enjoys cooking, crafting or pretty much any artisanal pursuit. It protects your clothing with the same waxed finish used on the brand’s celebrated jackets and provides ample cargo space.

Just like the Waxed Trucker, this burly apron is crafted in Los Angeles from 7-ounce Original Waxed Sailcloth milled in New Jersey by Martexin.

It comes in four of the core colors familiar from the Waxed Trucker line: Coal black, Forest green, Havana brown and Field Tan.

Waxed canvas makes an excellent apron for all the same reasons that people love it in a jacket. The waxed finish allows most materials, from tomato sauce to sawdust, to be wiped away with a wet cloth. However, chefs should be aware that oils will likely leave a permanent stain.

The black Coal option is best for the kitchen because it will disguise grease stains.

It is also more durable than cotton and synthetic textiles found in standard aprons. The Waxed Apron is built to last as long as its outerwear brethren and develops the same patina with age. An olive oil stain here and a knife scratch there add character.

Within arm’s reach

Along with looking cool and keeping clean, the Waxed Apron is indispensable because it allows you to keep any necessary tools and utensils on hand. Nothing is more frustrating in the kitchen than losing track of your equipment.

There are two patch pockets with stitched divides. The smaller chest pocket has two pen slots on the right-hand side, which is where I keep my meat thermometer.

The larger patch pocket is broken up into three equal sections. Because it will likely see the most use and hold the most weight, it is reinforced with four metal rivets.

Additionally, a hammer loop is located on the right-hand side, extending from the brim of the pocket. This is an ideal spot to stash a hand towel, if you’re not an over-the-shoulder guy like me.

Availability and price

Flint and Tinder first launched the Waxed Apron in 2022, and it has shifted in and out of the rotation ever since. Huckberry, the brand’s parent company, restocked it after a long absence, just in time for the holiday season.

It is priced at a remarkably fair $79, compared to many fan-favorite alternatives that go for well over $100.

Waxed Trucker fans may be drawn to Field Tan, as it is the quintessential color for the jacket, but I highly recommend Coal for anyone getting down and dirty in the kitchen — it hides stains much better.
