The retailer has made a critical addition to its range of stackable, portable tool storage solutions.

Be it with backpacks, footwear or viral toolsets, the value of a modular system ultimately hinges upon its overall completeness. In other words, if that one feature you need isn’t accommodated for, it can negate the viability of the entire package.

Just take Harbor Freight’s line of Bauer portable toolboxes, for instance. While the retailer has steadily updated the modular storage options in more ways than one, there’s a key piece that’s been missing since its debut.

It’s made for a glaring omission even among the Harbor Freight faithful, requiring compromises or roundabout solutions from other outfits. Now, however, Bauer has finally received the addition it needed.

I’m talking about the new Modular 2-Drawer Toolbox. Up until now, the Bauer ecosystem hasn’t offered, well, drawers.

Instead, Harbor Freight has provided a variety of top-opening boxes in different sizes and configurations. Along with small and large options, there’s also an organizer and even a basket-like tote.

While it might seem like a small hangup, it’s been a pretty big dealbreaker for anyone who’s been considering buying into the Bauer line. If you look at the competition, you’ll find that Craftsman, Dewalt, Husky and Milwaukee (among plenty of others) all offer a chest of drawers component as part of their modular storage systems.

As a result, even considering the competitive price points of Bauer’s various portable modular toolboxes, the overall system hasn’t really managed to stack up in some use cases (no pun intended). Users have either had to make do with the gap, hope for a third-party fit or turn elsewhere.

Now, the puzzle is complete.

A standalone standout

Even if you’re not looking to build out an entire tower of Bauer boxes, this latest release could prove a valuable addition to your garage.

A hinged handle allows it to be stacked or used as a standalone toolbox.

After all, it promises to be a compelling standalone option, too. Thanks to a tough resin construction, the box can take a beating during travel, whether that’s to a construction job, a track day or even a campsite.

Moreover, it touts some handy organizational measures to keep all of your tools in order. In addition to locks on the drawers to prevent accidental openings, Bauer’s Modular 2-Drawer Toolbox brings a set of removable dividers and tags so you can customize it according to your needs.

Like much of the competition, it also provides a generous weight capacity, rated to hold up to 50 pounds of tools in its pair of 3 ¼-inch drawers.

Unlike other pieces in the Bauer range, this toolbox still provides easy access when stacked.

That’s all well and good, but even for the mere variety of access it provides, this is a Harbor Freight toolbox that should have been part of the Bauer system since the beginning.

Availability and pricing

While Harbor Freight has only just joined the party with its Bauer Modular 2-Drawer Toolbox, the good news is that it does at least come in quite a bit less than some of its rivals. At just $69.99, it undercuts options from both Dewalt and Milwaukee by a respectable margin.
