An Unlikely Challenger Just Fired Another Shot at the Next Generation of Off-Road Motos

After teasing a new dirt-going two-wheeler back in January, Segway has officially spilled the rest of the deets.

Although most people still probably think of Segway as a maker of quirky self-balancing mobility solutions, the brand has expanded far beyond its mall-cop associations.

After Ninebot acquired the company back in 2015, it started dipping its toes into everything from power stations and electric scooters to ebikes and even go-karts.

All the same, the Segway’s latest effort is perhaps its most ambitious yet. In a bid to take on the next generation of off-road motorcycles, it’s once again launching an electric dirt bike.

A promising return effort

It’s called the Xaber 300. While you might know it from its debut at CES earlier in January, Segway has kept quiet about many of the specifics and only just confirmed the full details this week.

The wait seems to have been worth it, as the Xaber 300 promises big improvements compared to its Segway predecessors when it finally hits the market on May 15th. Between the bike’s 21-kW (28-horsepower) peak output and its 187-pound heft, the brand claims a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 0.25 kW/kg.

Those numbers certainly put it in contention with incumbents like the Surron Ultra Bee HP. While the Xaber 300 promises a slightly shorter max range (62 miles in 150 mode versus 71.5 for the HP), it touts a slightly higher 60-mph top speed while tipping the scales some eight pounds lighter.

In practice, Segway says this means that 0-50 mph arrives in just 5.5 seconds. Thankfully, then, the Xaber makes plenty of provisions for stopping power in the form of some four-piston brakes paired to 220mm discs.

To ensure control in the rough stuff, Segway has also given the bike a Marzocchi suspension setup comprising 37mm inverted forks up front and an 85mm shock at the rear. Ground clearance stands at just over 10.5 inches, while travel at each end comes to around 8.6.

Segway’s connected experience

Of course, being part of the Segway family, the Xaber 300 also heralds lots of tech to allow for a smarter, more controlled riding experience.

For instance, through the brand’s  X720 Titan controller, users have access to three distinct power levels in 150, 200 and 300 modes. If that’s not enough, Segway is also including a ‘Beast’ mode for max power and a ‘Pro’ mode for customizable delivery.

What’s more, the Xaber 300 brings a feature Segway is calling its ‘Electronic Clutch.’ Similar to the solution for the Stark Varg, it’ll simulate the feel of a mechanical clutch to provide more control to riders used to gas power.

And that’s not all. Beyond expected inclusions like a scalable traction control system, Segway is including optional items like Hill Hold Control and regenerative braking.

Even those are just the beginning of what the brand has planned for the Xaber 300. Through over-the-air updates, the bike will eventually gain features like a virtual Wheelie Coach that works with the Segway’s gyroscopic sensors and a Rider Control Mode that enables location tracking, geo-fencing and even real-time monitoring via the accompanying app.

Availability and pricing

While Segway may seem like an unlikely name to see on an electric dirt bike, the brand certainly seems committed to improving on past efforts. The Xaber 300 builds on the lessons learned from the X1000 prototype that competed in the experimental low-emissions vehicle class of the 2025 and 2026 Dakar Rally.

How this translates to a production offering only time will tell, but bikes will be rolling out soon. MSRP is set for $5,300, and Segway says that dealers around the country will begin taking orders starting May 15th.
