Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to survival and bushcraft knives. You need something that’s manageable in its size and weight, so you can haul it easily, but you also need robust materials and a big enough blade so you can chop, as well as slice and pierce.
Of course, it helps if you can get all of that (and more) in an affordable package, too. And that’s precisely what’s offered in the Böker Plus Sledgedog.

Alpha dog
It needs to be pointed out that, for a bushcraft survival knife, this one is on the larger end of the spectrum. Most fall somewhere between 9.0 to 11.0 inches, but the Sledgedog is 11.61. I’d say that still fits in the category, but it is closer to, say, a beefier hunting knife like a Bowie.
Of those 11.61 inches, 6.69 are made up by the D2 steel drop-point blade, granting it a very long cutting belly and a solid piercing point. This steel choice is also robust without adding too much to the price, making it a workhorse material.
Despite its larger-than-average length, the Sledgedog is still a solid option for big cuts and chops and precision, detail-oriented work alike — especially for those with larger hands.
