Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to survival and bushcraft knives. You need something that’s manageable in its size and weight, so you can haul it easily, but you also need robust materials and a big enough blade so you can chop, as well as slice and pierce.

Of course, it helps if you can get all of that (and more) in an affordable package, too. And that’s precisely what’s offered in the Böker Plus Sledgedog.

It needs to be pointed out that, for a bushcraft survival knife, this one is on the larger end of the spectrum. Most fall somewhere between 9.0 to 11.0 inches, but the Sledgedog is 11.61. I’d say that still fits in the category, but it is closer to, say, a beefier hunting knife like a Bowie.

Of those 11.61 inches, 6.69 are made up by the D2 steel drop-point blade, granting it a very long cutting belly and a solid piercing point. This steel choice is also robust without adding too much to the price, making it a workhorse material.

Despite its larger-than-average length, the Sledgedog is still a solid option for big cuts and chops and precision, detail-oriented work alike — especially for those with larger hands.

For a survival knife, the Sledgedog is somewhat large, but it makes up for the bulk with a hell of a lot of versatility.

This is aided by its handle, which makes up the remaining 4.92 inches. The tang of the blade is wrapped in TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber), which is commonly found on household tools (like hammers and screwdrivers).

Not only is this material exceptionally grippy (a necessity for hard outdoor use), but it’s also resistant to water, chemicals, temperature changes, and it’s highly durable and tough. Put in simpler terms: get a good grip on this handle, and that knife isn’t going anywhere you don’t want it to.

More than a knife

Reliable materials and a good size and silhouette are certainly significant factors when choosing an outdoor cutting tool, but they can definitely be helped by additional features and functions. Thankfully, the Sledgedog has plenty more to offer beyond raw cutting power.

For instance, it has a somewhat unusual finger guard (like a bolster you’d find on classic knives or a crossguard on a sword). This adds some extra security, preventing your fingers from slipping up the blade should you accidentally loosen your grip.

However, the finger guard also has a pair of integrated holes, which add some extra potential. Feed some paracord through them, as well as the lanyard hole at the butt, and you can add even more grip or transform this knife into a fishing spear (you just need a solid stick to tie it to). That ups the versatility even higher.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that this beefy knife does come with a leather sheath for easier hauling, which can be attached to your belt, bag or whatever else.
