In 2019, CRKT collaborated with former Green Beret Michael Rodriguez on a knife design for the brand’s Forged by War program, an ongoing partnership between CRKT and veterans that benefits service member-focused charities.

Called the Xolotl, the Aztec god-inspired knife was a slender, flipper reimagining of a classic switchblade. Then, at the tail end of 2024, the brand and Roriguez teamed up again for a fixed-blade take on that same knife.

Now, they’ve come together once more on perhaps the speediest, most accessible and most convenient interpretation of that knife, the CRKT Xolotl Automatic.

Aztec auto

As its name suggests, this take on the Xolotl is an automatic knife. More specifically, it’s an OTF (out-the-front,) meaning the blade doesn’t fold, but rather “slides” in and out of the handle.

To manage deployment, a spine-mounted slider controls the handle’s internal spring-loaded mechanism: push up to deploy the blade, and pull down to retract it. Not only does this make the knife incredibly speedy, but it also makes it more accessible and convenient to use, as it requires only a single hand to operate and can be easily operated even with gloved hands.

This style also more closely adheres to the design’s original inspiration, as the first Xolotl was a flipper take on a classic switchblade. However, this knife is also more modern and forward-thinking in its design than its Italian stiletto-inspired predecessor.

Still, it maintains the knife’s silhouette, enabling it to fit in right beside its fixed-blade and liner-lock siblings. That said, there are several other significant upgrades available in this new model.

Tactical toughness

Onto everyone’s favorite part of any knife: the blade. This is arguably the most significant material upgrade found in this take on the Xolotl. Whereas the previous versions had either SK-5 or 1.4116 steel, this one is titanium nitride-finished MagnaCut super steel.

Yeah, pretty spectacular. It’s also worth noting that the blade boasts a double-edged spear-point shape and measures 3.5 inches. That means, whichever way you hold it, you can still make those quick, crucial cuts.

That blade is mated to a machined aluminum handle, which is a pretty standard feature in OTF knives. However, this one has a 21-rib grip design, representing Rodriguez’s 21 years of service.

Furthermore, alongside the ambidextrous spine-mounted slider deployment, it also has a reversible pocket clip and a spiked tail that can be repurposed in case of emergency (for instance, as a glass breaker.)
