Fast approaching its 100th anniversary, Danner is best known (and perhaps only known) for its stylish and rugged heritage hiking boots, which makes sense, as that has largely been the brand’s focus since moving from Wisconsin to Portland, Oregon in 1936 — a calculated move to better serve the expanding Pacific Northwest timber market.
However, the brand is making a push into other categories now, paring its same durable-meets-dapper ethos into apparel, especially outerwear. In fact, the brand’s Danner Manzanita Windstopper Jacket might just be the best heavy-duty work jacket released so far this year.

Hot under the collar
Undoubtedly, your eye has probably already been drawn to this jacket’s most unusual feature: its collar. Done in a corduroy fabric that contrasts the shell fabric, its asymmetrical shape actually serves a specific purpose.
Note the longer side of the collar — see the buttonhole? It mates to a button sewn to the underside of the other side of the collar. When the weather starts to get a bit rough and you want to keep the wind, rain and more at bay, you can flip up the collar, button the two sides together, and keep your neck (and everything below it) far safer from the elements than with a standard collar alone.
