The harshest environments in the world do not care how flashy or fancy your knives are. And a delicate blade with upscale materials could actually hurt your chances of survival. That’s why serious bushcraft knives skip the flash and let their materials do the talking.

While the best knife you have in a survival situation is, obviously, the one you have on you, it doesn’t hurt to stack the deck a little by being careful about what you carry with you.

And you can’t do much better than GiantMouse’s brand-spaking-new Redington. It doesn’t look particularly boastful, but it doesn’t have to be; it has the backing of some of the most capable survivalist operatives in the world — yes, really.

While GiantMouse doesn’t need help crafting exceptional cutting tools, that doesn’t stop the brand from calling in assistance when it may be of value. And it could not have chosen better for The Redington than the instructors and operatives at SERE East, the U.S. Navy’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape training program located in Rangeley, Maine, who gave direct input into the design of this blade.

Inspired by the harsh yet stunning landscapes of its namesake, the vanished logging town of Redington, this incredibly robust fixed blade was built to meet the real-world demands of survival professionals, for whom reliability is an absolute must and failure is not an option.

This knife was designed with direct input from the instructors at SERE East, one of the world’s best, most respected survival schools.

Altogether, it measures 9.7 inches. Those unfamiliar with survival knives may find this a bit small, but it’s actually the ideal length for a bushcraft blade, balancing raw capability and cutting power with a more carry-friendly weight and a more discreet profile.

It also has an extremely versatile silhouette, “designed for
seamless transition between precision and power.” In other words, it can shift between hard, heavy tasks, like chopping and slashing, to precision tasks, like carving and slicing — all necessities in survival situations.

Survive by any means necessary

A balanced silhouette and versatile profile are all well and good, but they won’t matter much if the construction can’t stand up to snuff. Luckily, The Redington has an exceptionally robust selection of materials, perfectly suited to even the harshest environments.

For instance, the 5.1-inch blade is built from CPM MagnaCut steel. Along with being exceptionally popular, it also delivers
a nigh-unmatched balance of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. That blade also has a stonewashed finish that’s rugged, wear-resistant and low-visibility (for discretion).

That full-tang blade is sandwiched between a pair of Double Black Canvas Micarta scales, designed to offer exceptional grip in any conditions, even wet, cold or high-stress situations. But if users need a little extra grip, a place to store another survival tool or a means of turning the knife into a spear, the Redington’s finger guard has a lanyard hole in it that’s perfectly suited to paracord.

Lastly, all Redingtons are shipped with a Kydex sheath that’s also robust, making it convenient to carry on a pack or on your person. As the brand puts it, this knife “is a tool for those who understand that when you step off the map, your gear becomes your lifeline.”
