The slipjoint may be one of the oldest folding knife mechanisms there is, but that does not stop makers from revisiting it again and again, striving to make the simplest design function just a bit better.

I’m here to proclaim, they can go ahead and stop now. Because a small West Coast outfit has officially reached what I can only describe as “peak slipjoint.”

With its timeless look and high-end materials, the Sovranto Slipjoint can easily be passed down for generations.

The Ocaso Sovranto Slipjoint is not only a streamlined stunner, it’s also quite intentionally optimized for legal carry in a wide range of places.

The fact it features premium materials without totally breaking the bank is a nice bonus.

Unique provenance

The back story of this knife is worth a quick note, as it’s a bit unusual.

Founded by veteran knife industry exec Ric Valdez, Ocaso Knives is a burgeoning Southern California-based brand that works with a small cadre of custom knife makers to bring top-notch designs to life.

The Sovranto was commissioned in California, designed in Pennsylvania and built in Italy.

The Sovranto Slipjoint is the brainchild of Pennsylvania-based partner Mike Wallace, a man with a passion for handmade tools that are functional, ergonomic and durable.

The knife itself is produced in Maniago, Italy, essentially that country’s knifemaking capital, home to MKM and dozens of respected individual names, including Fox Knives, LionSteel and Viper.

Slim keeper

For the Sovranto, the slipjoint mechanism is quite intentional, as one of the goals here was a knife that can travel widely.

The same reasoning lies behind the blade, a 2.75-inch drop-point, complete with a fuller-like nail nick, which eases two-handed deployment

Thanks to its blade length and non-locking mechanism, the Sovranto is welcome in the UK and many other places.

These two factors together make the Sovranto good to go in places with stricter knife laws such as the UK, which still allows non-locking pocket knives with blades up to 3 inches in length.

Beyond such purpose-built design, however, the Sovranto has much else to recommend it.

Already super sleek, it can get even slimmer with the removal of the fold-over deep-carry pocket clip, which is also reversible.

The precision construction of the slipjoint mechanism ensures a smooth release, solid half-stop at 90 degrees, secure open position and crisp snap when closing.

I’d be seriously remiss not to mention that the materials chosen are very much on the premium end, likely of a higher quality than you’d expect from a $200 knife.

The satin-finished blade is made of MagnaCut super steel, which regular GP readers know offers a hitherto unrivalled blend of toughness, edge retention and corrosion resistance.

The perfectly matched, ergonomically grooved handle, meanwhile, is made of light and tough titanium, a big reason this immaculate package weighs just two ounces.

Availability and pricing

The Ocaso Sovranto Slipjoint is available now for $200.
