This Tiny, Super-Affordable Multi-Tool’s Unique Blade Configuration Channels an Apex “Predator”

While titanium construction and handy functions ensure it’s more than a grim gimmick, the Yautja vibes are delightfully inescapable.

Directed by John McTiernan and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the original Predator endures as one of the great ’80s action movies.

Beyond Arnie’s insane handshake with Carl Weathers and lines like “If it bleeds, we can kill it,” the real secret sauce is the gradual reveal of the Yautja and its high-tech hunting tools, including a cloaking device, thermal vision and a shoulder cannon.

Yet perhaps the most memorable of all is the most primitive: retractable serrated blades attached to a wrist gauntlet.

Nearly 40 years later, Orioner’s new MS-06 multi-tool recalls those deadly implements in a much smaller and less threatening form that nonetheless brings the joy back to everyday tasks.

Blades of (not so) gory

For the record, the Kickstarter campaign itself makes no mention of predators, instead citing as inspiration the futuristic mecha warriors of anime fame as inspiration.

I totally get it, but man, for anyone who dines on throwback action flicks, the Predator vibes, like the hunter itself, are basically inescapable.

(Gen Z-ers might say the blades remind them of Laura Kinney/X-23, but Predator did it first.)

While the blades on the multi-tool don’t eject and retract straight out as they do in the movie, the engineering approach here is much more functional, low-maintenance and, let’s face it, legal.

Measuring 1.3 inches, the Nessmuk-style blades rotate out of the MS-06’s titanium body with the help of nail nicks.

The blade material itself is 14C28N, which I would describe as “economically efficient” but nonetheless possesses enough edge retention, corrosion resistance and toughness for light everyday use.

While the alien hunter itself went the double jagged route, the MS-06 offers a bit more variety.

Having both plain-edge and serrated options offers much more versatility than you get with one or the other.

The plain-edge blade suits tasks such as package opening, leather slicing and pencil sharpening, while the serrated-edge blade is basically a minisaw that can methodically cut through thicker materials.

More than knives

As charmed as I clearly am by the blades, what we have here is a pretty handy keychain multi-tool even if you don’t give a crap what Jesse Ventura was up to between his wrestling and political careers.

Measuring just 2.18 inches and weighing a single ounce, the MS-06 packs a nice little array of essential functions.

The most noticeable are two integrated screwdriver bits, one Phillips and one flathead, the latter of which doubles as a small pry bar capable of opening cans.

In between the two bits is a groove that’s perfect for opening bottles, while the frame houses two hex wrenches for 2mm and 5mm bolts and a small hole at the opposite end accommodates a keyring for toting with your keys or on a lanyard.

Most of the MS-06’s functions do not rely on moving parts, boosting their long-term durability.

One thing I really like here is the fact that, beyond the blades, none of the other tools involve any moving parts, minimizing failure points.

After all, even if predators are fictional (a big if), you need every edge you can get anytime you wander into the jungle.
