To paraphrase Derek Zoolander in Zoolander: “Did you ever think that maybe there’s more to life than being really, really, really, ridiculously lightweight?”

If there is, no one told Eric Glesser, because the son of Spyderco founder Sal Glesser just designed quite possibly the most gravity-defying gentleman’s knife yet.

Despite its comically low weight, the Charisma still boasts a 2.98-inch blade that’s no joke.

Seriously. At just 0.8 ounces, the Spyderco’s new Charisma weighs the equivalent of a dollar’s worth of quarters.

Sure, there are “tiny knives” that weigh less, but this is a full-sized, fully functional EDC knife, which raises the obvious question: how the hell did he do it?

Can’t hardly weight

To put things in a bit more context, beyond quarters, the sort of reverse Mendoza line with EDC knives is two ounces.

That’s part of what makes Benchmade’s Bugout, which comes in at 1.85 ounces, the reigning EDC champ.

Eschewing liners is a sneaky weight-saving measure the Charisma has no qualms about embracing.

In order for the Golden, Colorado-made Charisma to tip the scales at less than half that figure, it did not need to cut corners, per se, but employ a few tricks when it comes to materials and design.

Regarding the former, it starts with the blade, a 2.98-inch modified wharncliffe made of Carpenter Technology’s nitrogen-enriched CTS BD1N stainless steel.

Spyderco has been using this steel in new, slimmed-down versions of popular knives such as the Para 3 Lightweight, so it’s clearly playing a role here.

While it is ultra-thin, it also offers respectable edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening.

The FRN may be slender, but it’s also durable and ergonomically shaped and textured for easy handling.

The other half of the equation is a sleek fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handle that boosts grip and control via bilateral longitudinal grooves and a pebbled texture.

The last lean ingredient is the reversible tip-up pocket clip, which takes the form of a skeletal wire, while a lanyard hole adds to the carry options.

As far as the design is concerned, a couple of factors help shed ounces. The first is the low-profile back lock, complemented by a function-forward Boye Dent, a relief cut in the release to prevent accidental closure.

Second, the injection-molded handle is linerless. The Charisma may be a gentleman’s knife, but to stay under an ounce, liners are a luxury it must live without.
