The crew of Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise may consider deep space “the final frontier,” but in reality, there’s an unexplored world far closer to home, albeit with just as many dangers as lurk amidst the stars.

The deep ocean, an abyss we’ve hardly scratched the surface of, is extremely cold, unforgiving and home to pressure levels capable of crushing steel.

Those who explore its relentless depths require specialized equipment that can stand up to the test — and sometimes, that equipment informs product development above the surface.

Vollebak’s latest release bridges the gap between underwater tech and surface-level exploration. It looks like a simple fleece, but it’s made from the same material that keeps British Special Forces alive in waters that routinely dip below 50°F.

Deep dive

Standard wetsuits are fine for surfing in chilly sets, but when it comes to protecting divers operating in the coldest, harshest waters on our big blue planet, only a drysuit will keep them alive.

While this fleece may be thick, it’s also imbued with four-way stretch for enhanced mobility.

The aptly named Deep Sea Diver Hoodie from Vollebak borrows drysuit material technology from the British Special Forces, which rely on an ultra-thick, flexible layer of fleece to keep operators warm underwater.

The hoodie brings that tech to land, transforming the hydrophobic, lightweight, lofted, moisture-wicking material into a seriously dense, 2.6-pound hoodie.

At 15.9 ounces per square yard, this is the thickest fleece Vollebak has ever used.

Deep-sea design

Vollebak didn’t just borrow fast-drying, odor-resistant, malleable fleece from the British Special Force’s drysuits — the brand also borrowed a few design details, as well.

Built-in four-way stretch means the Polartec Power Stretch fabric will move with you, and a two-way front zipper with moleskin and faux-suede tape provides ventilation when needed and comfort where zippers come into contact with skin.

Flatlock seams minimize friction, and egg-shaped front pockets are sewn onto the shell to minimize bulk.

The jacket also borrows its snorkel hood design straight from the cold-weather parkas developed for USAF aircrews in the ’50s.

This head covering creates a tiny microclimate just for your noggin thanks to its robust double-lined design, which seals in warmth and blocks the elements.

Availability and pricing

Due to its advanced engineering, the Deep Sea Diver Hoodie (Abyss Black edition) retails for a whopping $795, which is just a touch more expensive than your average fleece.

If you’re interested in owning one of the most advanced (and coziest) layers around, it is available on Vollebak’s official website.
