Back in early 2024, Vosteed launched a knife called the Ankylo. While it was a solid design built with respectable materials, its best feature was a novel innovation from the brand: the Vanchor lock.

This button-actuated locking mechanism was housed in the knife’s pivot, allowing for reliable locking in a much sleeker package than other, similar locks. It has since become a personal favorite of mine — and similar designs have started appearing in the catalogs of other brands.

Now, the brand has launched a spiritual successor to the Ankylo, which I’ve gotten to test firsthand. Called the Vosteed Thunderbeast, consider this a Pokémon-like evolution of its predecessor: It’s bigger, badder and better than ever before.

At 8.26 inches, the knife is surprisingly large, but its sleekness and light weight make it more carry-friendly.

Beast of burden

For reference, the spiritual ancestor to this knife, the Ankylo, was a substantial EDC knife, measuring 7.75 inches in total. However, the Thunderbeast blows it out of the water by adding more than half an inch, coming to 8.26 inches in total.

That said, it doesn’t feel as beefy as it sounds. This is due to a couple of factors. First, its design is quite sleek — even sleeker than its predecessor. The handle is slim and contoured in a way that makes it both easy to fit into your pocket and ergonomic in your grip.

The knife comes in four distinct colorways, all with the same materials and mechanisms.

Furthermore, the blade has a significant cutout — its thumb hole — which serves to reduce the weight of the heaviest portion of the knife, the steel blade. While I wouldn’t call it ultralight at 4.74 ounces, it’s definitely light enough to serve as a daily go-to EDC knife.

It’s also worth noting that the knife has little in the way of visible hardware and, due to the nature of its locking mechanism (again, it comes with the Vanchor pivot lock,) remains largely minimalist overall.

The Thunderbeast has three deployment methods: flipper, front flipper and thumb hole.

Elegant lines, monstrous strength

There is no denying the sleek design of this knife. Not only is it clean, but it’s convenient and utilitarian, too.

As mentioned, it features a button-actuated pivot lock, meaning you simply depress the pivot to release the blade — no other action is necessary. It also has a trio of deployment options: the thumb hole, a front flipper and a more traditional back flipper. The flippers are also low-profile, so they won’t catch on your pocket and cause undue frustration.

However, the materials also add significant value to this knife, and those benefits aren’t immediately noticeable. The blade, for instance, is crafted from what is arguably one of the hottest steels of the moment: Böhler M390. And the handle is crafted from solid titanium. It also has a matching machined pocket clip and backspacer.

But my favorite small detail is in the knife’s finish. The handle and blade both get a matte stonewash finish. But here’s the kicker: these finishes usually have a chalkboard-like feel to them that makes me highly uncomfortable. With this one, the chalky texture is thankfully absent, making me far more likely to carry this knife on a regular basis.

At 4.74 ounces, this knife is a lot lighter than you might expect, considering its size.
