In its junior year, the Nike Astrograbber trades its OG leather upper for one that wears in, not out.

Most shoes wear out with regular use. An upcoming Astrograbber variant promises just the opposite.

First released in the 1970s, then as a solution for synthetic football fields, the forgotten design re-emerged in 2024 as part of a Nike collaboration with the menswear brand Bode.

Now it looks set to receive its most heritage-inspired update yet.

The Nike Astrograbber “Medium Olive and Cacao Wow” replaces the leather upper of the original for one fashioned out of waxed canvas.

However, that means more than good old-fashioned patina. Waxed canvas is famously durable and rugged, used for centuries as a barrier against foul weather.

Here, Nike opted for classic olive green, paired with brown-leather accents like a broken-in Barbour jacket.

The brand’s signature waffle outsole completes the silhouette, endowing the shoe with genuine sneaker history.

Nike cofounder developed the detail using his wife’s waffle iron in the early ’70s, kicking off half a century of technical innovation from the biggest sportswear brand on the planet.
