If you subjected a black “Full Metal” G-Shock to the stone-washing treatment meant to soften up raw denim, it would probably survive — and it might look something like the new GMW-B5000V. Casio, however, achieved the striking weathered gunmetal look using a black ion plating (IP) treatment. The result is unique, and like well-worn jeans, no two watches will be “distressed” in exactly the same way. Led by bronze cases, patina is popular in watches now, and it’s easy to imagine something like the GMW-B5000V alongside well-worn jeans, a waxed canvas jacket, or a cinematically post-apocalyptic Tokyo.
The new lived-in-looking G-Shock GMW-B5000V is Casio’s latest version of the original 1983 G-Shock reborn in 2018 with a metal case and bracelet, as well as current Japanese technology. In addition to the various functions nearly every Casio G-Shock features including world time, calendar, stopwatch, and more, the Full Metal series has goodies like solar charging and bluetooth (providing a smartphone link whereby users can set their watch via an app). Like the best expertly distressed or torn Japanese jeans, however, it’s the patinated finish that distinguishes the GMW-B5000V as particularly cool and results in a price premium over its shiny counterparts. The Casio G-Shock “Full Metal” GMW-B5000V will have an MSRP of $1,000 and be available from June 2019.
