Editor’s Note: Watches & Wonders (formerly SIHH) and Baselworld 2020 are canceled but that hasn’t stopped watch brands large and small from debuting their new wares. To stay on top of this year’s best new watch releases, visit our tag page.
Omega’s Speedmaster and Seamaster series may garner more publicity than the rest of the lines in their catalog (and with good reason), but the Constellation series has always offered tremendous value for money — especially with respect to vintage iterations. Imagine being able to get a chronometer-certified, in-house movement on a beautiful steel bracelet with a pie pan dial and unique case back for, in many cases, less than $2,000. There are simply few other deals like this in vintage watches.
First introduced in 1952, the Constellation took on a new design in 1982 that has remained with the line ever since — namely, the integration of four “claws” on the case sides that lend the watches a distinctive look. The cases themselves became barrel-shaped, with short lugs surrounded by half-moon facets.
Thankfully, the Constellation never went away, and excitingly, Omega just announced the 5th generation men’s models. There are 26 references in all, each perfectly sized at 39mm (thank God) and crafted from stainless steel, 18k yellow gold and 18k Sedna gold.
The new collection features polished and bevelled edges on cases, “claws” and bracelets; slimmer bezels and claws; a new, conical crown; redesigned hands and hour markers; and redesigned bracelets with new links and a comfort-release function (leather straps in various colors are also available). Best of all, however, is that the movements used will now each receive Master Chronometer certification, the highest rating in the industry for precision and anti-magnetism.
Pricing begins at $5,850 for a steel model on leather and climbs from there — you can expect to pay $31,700 for an all-Sedna gold model (or you can buy 16 vintage versions from the 1960s — your call).
