One unique area of the watch market that’s seen some compelling growth in recent years is the once-rare genre of shaped dress watches.

These 1970s-inspired anomalies are suddenly everywhere, and for every high-end effort like the Berneron Mirage, it seems we’re getting a handful of far more affordable takes on the style from the likes of new brands such as Toledano & Chan and Anoma.

But even though those latter brands are more affordable, that doesn’t necessarily make them more attainable, as their business model has been to launch their watches in small, limited runs that end up being almost impossible to get.

Well, Anoma has decided to change course a bit by launching its first permanent collection, meaning one of the hottest shaped watches around just became a whole lot easier to buy.

Stone and Abyss

Founded by Matteo Violet-Vianello, formerly of A Collected Man, Anoma has only ever produced one model: the A1. First appearing in 2024 as the A1 First Series, the A1 features an original rounded triangle case that takes direct inspiration from a 1950s coffee table by Charlotte Perriand, itself a part of the biomorphic mid-century design movement based on organic shapes.

After the first run of blue-dial A1 watches, Anoma launched a unique piece for charity featuring an engraved dial, then the dark-lacquered “Slate” model, and last year, the A1 Optical, which came in two colorways with an engraved dial similar to the previous year’s pièce unique. All of these watches sold out quickly, never to be produced again.

But now, Anoma has launched the A1 Core Collection. Consisting of two distinct dial styles, the Core Collection is intended to be permanent, meaning if it sells out, you can expect it to be restocked in due time.

The Core Collection features the same polished steel 39mm x 39mm triangular case as previous versions of the A1, along with the same polished leaf handset and the same Sellita Cal. SW100 automatic movement inside.

What’s different are the dials, both of which are new. First is the Abyss, which is reminiscent of the blue dial on the A1 First Series but is more complex. It features three layers of lacquer, one blue-green and two midnight blue, with its center portion mirror-polished and its outer section featuring a sunburst pattern.

The all-gray Stone version offers more texture, with its center section featuring a blasted finish resulting in a granular pattern and its outer section brushed to a sunburst finish, like on the Abyss. Both models feature the same silver printed indices, crosshair motif and Anoma wordmark below the hand stack.

Both models also come on grained Italian leather straps: light blue for Abyss and taupe for Stone, and while they appear integrated due to the lugless design of the A1 case, they’re actually standard 18mm straps and can be swapped out with a plain ol’ spring bar tool.

Availability and pricing

The Anoma A1 Core Collection is priced the same as last year’s limited A1 Optical at £2,200 (~$2,978), which represents a pretty steep jump over the First Series’ decidedly more approachable £1,300 (~$1,700 at the time) price point two years ago.

Even with the increase, which is presumably owed to the more complex dial construction of the new models, the A1 remains one of the biggest bargains in the white-hot independent shaped watch space.

Both the Abyss and Stone are available to purchase now on Anoma’s website, with the first 300 orders expected to ship out in June.
