Citizen’s Promaster series is among its most beloved and best-selling, especially the brand’s signature diver. However, the Promaster encompasses numerous other watch styles, including affordable GMTs, pilot’s watches and more.

The latest, the Citizen Promaster WaveTracker, could easily be mistaken for a diver, as it borrows some styling elements and functionality. But it’s really a highly convenient, formidable outdoor adventure watch in disguise.

Ride the wave

As this watch’s name suggests, it is built specifically with ocean-going adventures in mind, much like a dive watch. It is even rated for depths of up to 200 meters, meaning it is waterproof enough for snorkeling and light diving.

However, it is not a dive watch. Rather, this watch was built with sailing performance in mind. But here’s the real kicker: that actually makes it more useful as an outdoor adventure watch than similarly styled divers, including those from Citizen.

The watch also comes in a sportier edition with orange accents and a polyurethane strap.

For instance, it has a full suite of onboard functions, including a tide tracker, perpetual calendar, racing timer, chronograph and more. And that’s just as far as tech goes. It also has other useful manual elements.

For example, that’s not a dive timer bezel. Instead, it’s a 360-degree bezel, which functions more like a compass and allows for manual navigation, which is especially helpful out in the field, such as when you’re camping or engaging in bushcraft.

Sol power

There are three versions of this watch, but they all share common elements. For instance, they all have stainless steel cases (which share the same format), sapphire crystals and the same suite of functions.

They also all get a Citizen Eco-Drive U812 movement. This reliable, dependable quartz movement is powered by light, so you can keep it ticking so long as you have access to literally any light source, although the sun tends to work best (it is an outdoor watch, after all).

However, they do differ stylistically. Two of them, the gold and silver ones, come with stainless steel link bracelets that match their case color. The third, however, is sportier, boasting an orange polyurethane strap that matches its bezel insert color.

The stylistic and strap differences also mean the price varies, with the sporty PU strap version coming in at $795 and the highest-end option, the gold one, priced at $950.

At 42 millimeters, it’s a larger watch (per current trends), but that makes it easier to read and operate during your outdoor adventures.
