Whether you’re a musician, director or watchmaker, the only thing more challenging than creating a breakthrough hit is crafting the follow-up.

Just over a year ago, in October of 2024, Echo/Neutra’s Rivanera became one of the most hyped dress watches under $2,000. Despite the pressure inescapably linked to such success, the Italian boutique brand not only delivered on the sequel but also topped the original.

Echo/Neutra has only been around since 2018, but it has already established a signature design language — a blend of classical design and modern architecture in a monotone color palette — and launched a true flagship watch.

Now, a new variation of the Rivanera, aptly named Piccolo for its downsized case, looks so good that it could elevate the brand to the top of the indie watch scene.

It retains the same case design, although shortened by 7mm lug-to-lug, and doubles down on the dial’s minimalism.

The Rivanera Piccolo case is still 26mm wide, but shortened from 40mm down to 33mm lug-to-lug.

The case is still made of Grade 5 titanium with a sandblasted finish, which creates a charcoal gray color. It has a flat top, angled lugs, tiered sides and is fitted with an octagonal bolt crown.

Anyone who wore the original Rivanera was immediately struck by how lightweight the case is. Although the Piccolo is physically smaller, it is actually heavier by a whopping eight grams, tipping the scales at 29 grams.

That extra weight comes from swapping out the ETA manual movement of the original design for an automatic Sellita movement, but more on that later.

Like a hit song with a catchy chorus, the three new dials are the hooks that make the Rivanera Piccolo impossible for watch fans to get out of their heads.

Minimal or ultra minimal

The Rivanera Piccolo dial ditches the Art Deco details from the original in favor of an ultra-minimalist design with pin-shaped hour and minute hands, no seconds hand and no tracks or markers of any kind.

Rivanera is printed at 12 o’clock, and a tiny date widow sits between “Swiss” and “Made” at six o’clock.

Two of the three dials have a “Grain de Riz” guilloché pattern emanating from the hand stack. Rather than being used as a background, it dominates the dial, with only a slightly raised narrow frame, placed just inside the dial’s edge, obscuring the pattern.

The third dial is my personal favorite because it turns the minimalism up to eleven with a smooth, black dial that absorbs 99.4 percent of the light that touches it. It is made from an acrylic called Musou Black, which has a similar effect to the more widely known Vanta Black material, but is slightly less effective by a few tenths of a percent.

The matte black dial, referred to as the MB, reminds me of the clean lacquer dial versions of the Tank Louis Cartier, one of the all-time great minimalist dress watches. But this, of course, available for a fraction of the Cartier’s price.

Switching to automatic

Echo/Neutra made a substantial change on the inside of the Rivanera Piccolo as well. It has been upgraded to an automatic movement.

As expected, this transition required the case height to be extended by one millimeter, with the Rivanera Piccolo measuring 6.9mm.

It is a delightfully tiny Sellita caliber SW1000 automatic movement that beats at 4Hz and has a 46-hour power reserve. A signed rotor and decorative bridge are visible through a sapphire exhibition caseback, secured by four exposed hex screws.

Availability and price

At first glance, the idiom “less is more” comes to mind when taking in the Rivanera Piccolo, but I believe that this watch offers more than its predecessor in terms of nuanced beauty and functionality.

The featherweight case is heavier by an inconsequential amount, but the new shape makes it more wearable. While some people prefer manual movements for the tactile connection, an automatic is objectively more functional.

Above all, the new dials replace Art Deco beauty with mesmerizing minimalism.

The Echo/Neutra Rivanera Piccolo is available now from Echo/Neutra for $1,980. All three dials come with a black rubber pin-buckle strap. The white dial comes with an additional black cordovan leather strap, while the two black dial options include an extra black pebble grain leather strap.
