G-Shock Employs Japanese Blacksmith Craft for an Ultra-Tough Samurai-Inspired Watch

G-Shock’s connection to Japan is pretty apparent. After all, it’s the brand’s country of origin. It’s also one of the best and most popular Japanese watch brands, alongside Seiko, Citizen and more.

However, with the brand’s latest release, the G-Shock MRG-B2000KT, the brand really puts the country it calls home at the forefront. This exceptionally stunning watch draws from both Japanese myth and ancient samurai craftsmanship.

Admittedly, a lot is going on with this watch. That said, the bezel is a pretty clear focal point. Alongside the rest of the case, it’s crafted from solid titanium, but it’s a lot more special than just its material.

Expert Japanese metalsmith Kobayahashi Masao — a third-generation metal craftsman based in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture — handcrafted the bezel, featuring its stunning phoenix design. This culturally significant, mythological creature represents good fortune and divine wisdom.

The bezel has also been given a distinctive dark blue-green kurogane-iro (“iron color”) DLC coating, which has its own cultural significance, as it’s meant to evoke the tsuba iron guard of a Japanese samurai sword.

As a finishing touch, the bezel screws are inlaid with genuine emeralds, adding a touch of sparkle that complements the emerald details surrounding the watch’s sub-dials.

Rise from the ashes

Beyond the bezel, the watch’s case is also pretty remarkable. As mentioned, it too is crafted from solid titanium. However, it has undergone a heat treatment that imparts a unique crystallized pattern. According to the brand, “the case projects the shimmering beauty of the crystalline nie patterns on a Japanese sword blade.”

The case also features a Clad Guard Structure, which protects the crown and buttons without impeding their operation. To suit the altogether breathtakingly impressive case, the brand has paired it with a dark green Dura Soft rubber strap that’s resistant to stains, aging and other forms of discoloration.

And, of course, this is still a G-Shock at its core. For one, that means it has the brand’s legendary shock-resistant movement housing. It also features the brand’s ultra-accurate and reliable Tough Solar movement, which is powered by light, eliminating the need for manual charging or battery replacement.

It’s also Bluetooth-compatible and radio-connected, for easy automated time adjustments. And it has the whole suite of other functions we’ve come to expect from G-Shock, like a calendar, alarms, a worldtimer and so much more.
