For over 30 years, Luminox has contracted with the U.S. military’s Navy SEALs, some of the most elite operatives in the world. Over that same span, the brand’s customers have reaped the rewards of that partnership in the form of myriad hardcore timepieces.

Take, for instance, the Luminox Navy SEAL Chronograph XS.3587. This unique combination of timepiece styles (a diver and a chronograph) comes in an incredibly tough, capable package, and this particular edition features a sharp, tactical-inspired colorway.

An unusual, advantageous combo

While divers and chronographs are two of the most popular watch styles, this watch combines the two, which might seem a bit strange and disparate (or at least it did to me). To better understand the advantages and drawbacks, I spoke with our resident watch expert, Johnny Brayson.

I was worried that their functionality might clash, but Brayson quieted those concerns. “They’re plenty functional as long as they’re lumed,” he told me. “Plus, they give you the opportunity to time two separate events: one using the bezel, and one using the chrono.”

The stealthy, blacked-out case and strap pair beautifully with the coyote tan subdials and indices.

And lume is decidedly not a problem for Luminox, as the brand derives its name from that very feature. Like its brethren, this watch features the brand’s signature 25-year lume on its hands (including the subdials) and hour markers.

Brayson went on to point out something else I hadn’t considered. “It takes some impressive engineering to make [diver chronos],” he said. “Pushers are two more ways for water to get in that need to be accounted for.” And since this watch is rated to 200 meters, it’s fair to say the brand has masterfully sidestepped that potential weakness.

Tactical meets practical

While this watch’s lume is certainly one way it manages readability, especially in low-light situations, it’s far from the only means. Some credit is owed to its new colorway.

This take on the Navy SEAL Chronograph is mostly blacked out, including its rubber strap and Carbonox case. (Reminder: Carbonox is Luminox’s signature carbon-based material that is incredibly tough and lightweight.) However, the subdials and indices are all done in a coyote tan colorway, a classic tactical option.

The color combo and integrated lume make for a handsome watch and make for better visibility and at-a-glance use.

The black base is classic and timeless, and the coyote tan details maintain the military-inspired styling while also making for easier at-a-glance reading. It’s a striking combo that also connects to the timepiece’s history and inspiration.

It’s worth noting that this watch also features a Swiss-made Ronda 5030.D quartz movement, a mineral glass crystal and a 316L stainless-steel caseback.

Despite the unusual chronograph functionality, this is still a true diver good for depths of up to 200 meters.
