While it is often looped into the broader field watch category, the Rolex Explorer II was actually marketed for spelunking, or cave exploration, when it was released in 1971. The 24-hour complication was borrowed from the GMT Master to help distinguish night from day when isolated from the sky, not for travel.

Despite how few people enjoy poking around inside caves, the Explorer II became iconic as a more general travel and adventure watch with everyday appeal. Countless dupes and homages have followed, but an ongoing collaboration between California’s Nodus and Kansas’s Raven Watches just dropped the best option priced under $1,000.

Nodus

Nodus specializes in adventure-ready timepieces, and when that expertise was combined with Raven Watches’ keen eye for retro design in 2024, the TrailTrekker was born. Introduced in a blacked-out Cerakote-finished case and bracelet with a matte charcoal bezel and dial, it had a stealthy, tactical appearance.

The new Basecamp iteration has a brighter, more retro-inspired appearance that lands closer to the Explorer II. The case, bracelet and fixed bezel mimic the Crown’s spelunker with sandblasted stainless steel and a black lacquered 24-hour track.

Dialed in

The dial, however, is where the collaborators beat their own trail.

The TrailTrekker Basecamp features a beautiful, infinitely wearable royal blue dial with a matte finish. Eggshell white Old Radium X1 Super-LumiNova on the hands, hour markers and even the date disc create a complementary, highly legible contrast.

The trapezoidal date window at 6:00 has a metallic frame matching the hour markers, which, combined with the disc color-matched to the markers, conceals its presence to the point where you hardly notice its there.

Splashes of yellow are provided by the GMT hand and bold dashes at the cardinal points along the minute track skirting the dial’s rim.

The brushed steel handset is pulled directly from the Nodus Contrail GMT collection, but the geometric collection of applied hour markers was devised exclusively for the Trailtrekker.

The subtly cobranded dial features the Nodus logo printed at 12:00, underlined by “TrailTrekker,” and the Raven shield logo printed at 6:00.

Kitted out

The TrailTrekker Basecamp lacks the durable Cerakote finish of the original, but it is still a damn fine exploration and travel watch. The coarse finish on the 40mm exposed steel case isn’t as scratch-resistant, but it helps mask any scuffs, scrapes and smudges.

The dial is capped with the blue-tinted box sapphire crystal, a Nodus calling card, providing a crystal-clear view.

The knurled screw-down crown is protected by a substantial crown guard and helps ensure the 200m water resistance. A steel screw-in caseback features an etching of a covered wagon, a nod to the nineteenth-century pioneers who moved from Kansas to California.

Ticking away inside the case is a Miyota Caliber 9075 automatic movement with a “true” GMT complication, allowing the hour hand to be set independently. Nodus regulates the movement to an accuracy of +/- 8 seconds per day, and it provides a 42-hour power reserve.

The Trailrekker Basecamp comes on a tapered three-link steel bracelet equipped with a Nodus Extension Module clasp, allowing on-the-fly adjustment.

Availability and pricing

I don’t even know why I’m surprised at this point, but Nodus drops another beautiful, spec-packed watch that has no business being priced under $1,000. And yet, here it is, the Nodus x Raven Watches TrailTrekker Basecamp is available now from Nodus for $875.
