Rado is probably best known globally for its ceramic shaped watches like the Diastar and Centrix, but if you ask the average watch enthusiast for their favorite Rado, nine out of ten times the answer will be the Captain Cook.

A 1960s dive watch revived by the Swatch Group brand in 2017, the Captain Cook is one of the best divers in its class, combining its mid-century good looks with upgraded materials from the brand known as the master of them.

Generally speaking, the Captain Cook’s unique design traits, which include a broad arrow hour hand, a concave bezel and a rotating anchor logo on the dial, prevent it from drawing many comparisons to other dive watches. But the brand’s latest model brings to mind a classic Rolex Submariner … albeit for a far lower price tag.

A collaboration with European Cricket, for which Rado serves as the official timing partner, the new limited-edition Captain Cook takes pretty clear inspiration from the Rolex Submariner Date “Bluesy” (current Ref. 126613LB), an iconic Sub reference recognized for its blue dial and bezel and two-tone “Rolesor” steel/yellow gold construction.

Like all Rolesor Rolexes, the Bluesy’s gold parts, in this case its center links, bezel and crown, are made of solid gold. That’s part of the reason why the watch retails for $19,450. The new Rado, meanwhile, is all stainless steel and uses yellow gold PVD coating on its center links, bezel and crown to give a similar visual look but for far less money.

Rado’s new Captain Cook also has a deep blue dial and ceramic bezel insert like the Bluesy, though the Rado’s dial adds a gradient effect that’s darker at the edges and lighter at the center. The luminous hands and applied index surrounds are also yellow gold-tone on the Rado, again mimicking the Rolex, but the watch differentiates itself by incorporating some red highlights on its seconds hand tip and swinging anchor logo as a nod to European Cricket’s red leather balls.

What’s more, the Rado piles on the accessories in a way that is wholly unfamiliar to Rolex buyers. In addition to the steel and gold PVD bracelet, the watch also includes a black rubber strap and a navy-and-gold nylon NATO strap. The rubber strap and bracelet both feature quick-release spring bars to make changes a cinch, something else you won’t get from any Rolex, and the steel bracelet’s folding clasp is uniquely made of lightweight titanium.

Rounding out the Rado Captain Cook x European Cricket Limited Edition’s specs are the ETA-based Calibre R763 automatic movement providing 80 hours of power and boasting an anti-magnetic Nivachron hairspring, an AR-coated box sapphire crystal, a 42mm x 12.3mm case, 300m water resistance and a European Cricket engraving on the caseback.

Availability and pricing

Don’t worry; Rado isn’t asking anywhere near the Bluesy’s near-$20K price tag.

Instead, the watch has a very reasonable SRP of just $3,000, making it a highly competitive diver at its price point. It’s available now from Rado, and while the watch is labeled a “Special Edition,” it does not appear to be limited.
