Late last year, Timex launched its Expedition Capstone, a sportier take on its long-running, iconic field watch. For the most part, this new addition to the brand’s legendary affordable adventure timepiece lineup seems to be a big hit.

At least, it’s been a big enough hit that the brand has already returned to it with a few new additions. Not only is the Timex Expedition Capstone getting a pair of new additions (including one particularly retro version), but the brand has also added chronographs to the family.

Time for an adventure

While the previous versions of the Expedition Capstone erred on the side of sporty, boasting rubber straps, these two new additions are a bit more classic and timeless. That said, they’re still largely based on the same core watch with its stainless steel tonneau-shaped case, bold dial markers (which, along with the hands, are lumed) and date windows.

However, there are a couple of noteworthy differences. For starters, these watches see the rubberized straps swapped for classic stitched leather options — brown on one and black on the other. They also eschew the black finish of the cases in favor of brushed steel, granting them even more retro styling.

Of the two, the most stylistically exciting might be the one with the blue dial and brown strap. This is because it gives a particularly vintage vibe, reminiscent of National Parks signage and throwback Smokey the Bear campaign art. Of course, the other (the black one) is perhaps a bit more universally wearable, so the choice between is going to be tough.

Either way, both watches retain the same reliable quartz movement that keeps them ticking dutifully. And yes, they’re both still pretty remarkably affordable, checking in at just $129.

All in the family

Those two standard field watches, for all their spot-on styling, are only a part of the story. In fact, they’re the minority, at least by the numbers. That’s because Timex has also added a new model to the Expedition Capstone lineup: a chronograph.

Like their less complicated siblings, these watches sport much of the same styling, including a tonneau-shaped case with a brushed finish in black or raw steel. However, they are a bit larger, measuring 41 millimeters in diameter, instead of 39.

That, of course, is to accommodate their larger, yet still reliable and affordable quartz movements with their chrono complications, as well as the trio of subdials. And since they’re chronos, yes, they have two pushers astride their crowns.

There are several configurations to choose from, which vary stylistically and in regard to their strap. Essentially, you have the choice between rubberized straps and link bracelets that match the case finish, as well as slight color variations between green and black dials. And yet, none cost over $209, making them all highly approachable.
