Italian microbrand Unimatic has made a name for itself with its distinctly minimalist tool watch designs. The brand has firmly established its own unique take on “cool,” and no one would ever accuse Unimatic watches of being flashy or flamboyant.

That’s what makes the brand’s latest limited edition so surprising. Working in tandem with men’s fashion destination The Armoury, Unimatic’s latest watch is shockingly colorful, eye-catching and sporty.

And I love it.

Seeing red

The Unimatic x The Armoury Modello Cinque U5S-TA2 ‘10.15’ — or the 10.15 for short — was created to honor both the 10th anniversary of Unimatic and The Armoury’s 15th birthday.

The watch is built on Unimatic’s Modello Cinque platform, the brand’s smallest and most wearable tool watch at 36mm across in brushed stainless steel with a thin bezel and oversized screw-down crown. That’s pretty familiar territory, but what’s really unique here is the dial.

Swapping out Unimatic’s normal muted tones is a matte white dial with a simple printed hour track in glossy black and an eye-catching minute track in bright red. The bold minute track has a checkered pattern and draws aesthetic inspiration from mid-century motorsports chronographs, and it’s the clear highlight of this piece.

Accenting the minute track is a skeletonized handset in matching red, with the Armoury’s logo at 6:00 also in red. The rest of the dial text is in black, while the seconds hand is in plain brushed stainless steel with a skeletonized lollipop counterweight. Further adding to the colorful vibes is a quick-release bright-red TPU strap, though the watch also includes a black suede strap for those times when you prefer a more muted look.

The design sounds weird on paper, and I suppose it is pretty strange, but I really like the way it all comes together. The watch still has Unimatic’s hallmark minimalist tendencies, but it’s gussied up with an unexpected use of color and pattern. It’s not a bastardization of the brand’s trademark design language, but rather an exploration of how far it can be stretched while still looking undeniably like a Unimatic.

Pricing and availability

The Unimatic x The Armoury “10.15” is individually numbered on a specially engraved caseback and is limited to just 120 pieces. Like other Modello Cinque examples, it’s powered by a Sellita SW200-1b automatic movement, has a domed sapphire crystal and boasts an impressive water-resistance rating of 300m.

The watch comes with a co-branded UNIMATIC x The Armoury tough case and is available to preorder now from both brands’ online stores, though it is priced slightly differently at each. The Armoury lists the 10.15 for $1,500, while Unimatic’s site has it for $1,520.
