Faulkner once wrote, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” Almost a century later, Gretchen Valade is yet the latest person to prove the point.

For years, Valade oversaw waste reduction and circular design initiatives at Carhartt, a brand founded by their great-great-grandfather in the 1880s.

Now she leads an offshoot called Wylie Welling, which sells one-of-a-kind pieces from the Carhartt archive. The latest drop, Collection 04, is perhaps the most well-rounded of the bunch.

Like previous releases, this one includes rare garments and colorways dating back to the 1970s. Highlights include a teal Santa Fe Jacket, unlined denim chore coat and multiple Active Jacs in navy and olive green.

Though most of the pieces feature genuine patina, one-off repairs and even material upgrades — various plaid shirts from the ’90s and 2000s come with new mother of pearl buttons — there’s a deadstock Detroit Jacket that stands out in exceptional condition.

“As part of our Deadstock assortment, this jacket was produced over twenty years ago but ultimately never sold at retail,” the brand claims.

“We sourced these with tags and have given them a machine wash and dry to sanitize them, remove any stains from storage, and stabilize any shrinkage.”
