Crafting the perfect one-bag solution for EDC and travel is, frankly, impossible. Every trip comes with different needs, which can mean needing either more or less space for your gear. The best bag for one adventure might be overkill (or underkill) for the next.

However, The North Face’s Base Camp Voyager Pro Buildable Travel System may be the ideal workaround. Instead of one bag, this system includes four that function as both a complete, single unit and as standalone bags.

It might just be the single most versatile packing solution the lauded brand has ever offered.

Versatility is key

The Voyager Pro system hinges on the interactability of its four available bags. All of them serve their own specific purpose, yet they’re crafted with the same materials and design approach.

The largest pack in the system is the Voyager Pro Travel Pack, which serves as the base for the entire set. On its own, it’s a classic 36-liter travel bag, complete with an internal padded laptop sleeve, mesh storage slots (like you might find in a carry-on), water bottle pouches, a luggage pass-through and more.

The next size down is the Voyager Pro Lightweight Pack, which is still a backpack on its own but is much smaller, offering a daypack’s worth of storage (15 liters). It still has some internal organization, though it’s much more svelte than the full-sized Travel Pack.

The Voyager Pro Crossbody, as you might expect, functions like a sling bag. It has just 4.0 liters of storage, comes with its own adjustable shoulder strap and has internal dividers for organization.

And the last pack is the Voyager Pro Travel Pouch, which is just one liter, making it by far the most compact and EDC-friendly of the bunch, offering just enough room for your essentials, like your phone, keys, wallet, knife and so on.

Modular mavericks

But here’s the kicker: while all these bags work as standalones, they’re also designed to go together. All four combine into one complete unit, kind of like the Power Rangers coming together to create the Megazord (or Voltron, if that’s more your speed).

While they’re easy to assemble, they’re just as easy to take apart to use one at a time, should you so desire. It definitely doesn’t hurt that they’re all built the same and have the same unified styling.

Furthermore, they’re tough and durable enough for travels big and small. Their exteriors are built from 300D recycled polyester with TPU coating, making them weatherproof and lightweight, as well as resistant to scuffs, abrasions, punctures and the like.

They also all get even more rugged 840D recycled ballistic nylon bottoms with PU and DWR coatings.

Since there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler, you can mix and match them to your liking. They’re even all sold separately, so you don’t have to worry about over-investing if you don’t want to.

The Travel Pouch is so small that it attaches to the shoulder straps of the larger bags. Yet it still works on its own as a fanny-style pack when needed.
