Wallace & Barnes is only 15 years old, established as a sub-brand of J.Crew during the 2010s American workwear renaissance, but it stands toe-to-toe with heritage names like Dickies and Carhartt.

The label was created as an homage to the golden age of American blue-collar craftsmanship and faithfully reproduces vintage designs. The Duck Canvas Utility Jacket is a perfect example, and right now, the wearable Americana is exceptionally affordable.

J.Crew’s annual midsummer sale is here, and any inventory left from the Fall 2025 through the Spring 2026 collections is priced to move. There is a lot to sort through, but easily the best deal is on the Wallace & Barnes Duck Canvas Utility Jacket.

The classic work jacket is almost a hybrid of Carhartt’s two most popular designs: the lined, zip-front Detroit jacket and the unlined, core-style Michigan Coat.

But Wallance & Barnes draws on the same early-twentieth-century inspiration as Carhartt, with both American brands laying equal claim to the uniforms that outfitted the golden age of American industry.

Make it work

As the name suggests, the Duck Canvas Utility Jacket is made with 100-percent cotton duck canvas, a material renowned for its durability. J.Crew does not list the weight, but I estimate it to be about 10 ounces.

The pockets and cuffs are reinforced with metal rivets, the front is closed with a metal zipper and the sleeves are secured with metal donut rivet buttons.

Double-needle stitching is used on the critical seams, and a pleated yoke on the back allows for a full range of motion.

Its whats inside that counts

The collar is lined with fine-wale corduroy for a soft feel, and the interior is lined with a red, green, brown and yellow cotton flannel tartan.

Like the Carhartt Michigan Coat, there are four exterior patch pockets, with a button flap on the right-hand-side chest pocket. There is an additional vent pocket on the interior chest.

Availability and pricing

J.Crew revived Wallace & Barnes in 2025 after a brief hiatus, and it is back to producing the highest-quality apparel the New York brand offers. However, with the departure of Men’s Creative Director Brendon Babenzien in early 2026, it remains to be seen how long the sub-brand will stick around.

With the original price of $238 discounted down to $83, now is the time to grab this Wallace & Barnes staple. As of now, every size except extra large is still available.
