Long before Crocs were both panned and praised for their combination of “so-ugly-they’re-cool” looks and high levels of comfort, there were Uggs. Dating back to the 1970s, the brand’s boots have long been staples of the fashion industry, much to the chagrin of haters and joy of loyalists.

Love or hate them, there’s no denying their staying power, which is largely due to their comfort. That said, they’ve been lacking in other respects.

However, that seems slated to change, if the new Ugg Classic Mini GTX (and its low-top sibling, the Ugg Tasman GTX) are any indication. This boot takes one of the brand’s most iconic styles and gives it a major boost to durability and capability.

Snug as a Ugg

While there are some significant changes to this boot, it’s still an Ugg at its core. That means it retains the brand’s signature styling and is largely faithful to the way they’ve been built for decades.

That starts with the signature upper, which is still made from suede, just as it always has been. And that’s true for both the Classic Mini and the Tasman, although the latter has a more intricate collar design.

If you don’t like the mid-length boot, there’s also a low-top slip-on that’s largely built the same.

Both shoes also have a cozy, comfy UGGplush lining, which is a combination of wool, lyocell and polyester. This thick, fuzzy lining is both soft to the touch and helps capture warmth, whether you wear socks with it or not.

In fact, the boots are so warm that the brand has them rated for temperatures as low as -4˚F (-20˚C). Other details include reinforced pull tabs, sugarcane EVA midsoles and a foam footbed.

Classic looks, beefier build

The upgrades come in tandem. One, invisible to the naked eye, affects the upper, while the other, more obvious upgrade is found on the outsole.

Let’s start up top. That classic suede upper is now completely waterproof, courtesy of an added Gore-Tex membrane. That means the boots can now contend with rain, sleet, snow and even mud and other muck without getting soggy and bogged down with moisture. It also makes them easier to clean.

At the bottom, the classic outsole has been replaced with a more capable and rugged Vibram option. Not only do these boots have a deeper, more all-terrain-friendly tread, but they’re also more slip- and skid-resistant.

That pair of alterations might seem slight, but the changes make a big difference to the boots’ overall formidability. It transforms these from casual comfort footwear into something you can wear all winter long, even when the weather gets dreadful.
