Ikea is really dialed in on home audio these days.

In the last several weeks, the Swedish furniture giant has introduced the Solskydd range of wireless speakers, as well as the Kulglass table lamp speakers (similar to its previous Symfonisk speakers, but more design-focused and without the Sonos collaboration). Both are on the “high end” side of its recent offerings.

If you’re looking for an even more affordable portable speaker, Ikea also introduced the Kallup, a small cube-shaped speaker that comes in several colors and costs just $10.

Additionally, Ikea has introduced a few speakers for parents with young children. First, it launched the Grejsimojs-powered speaker, which is shaped like a small dog, doubles as a nightlight and costs $40. And now it has unveiled another simple Bluetooth speaker in the same collection, targeting the same audience.

Ikea describes the speaker as a “cute little music friend that vibes with the beat wherever you go and spreads laughter, fun and happy tones at every turn.”

Half portable speaker, half toy

Introducing the Ikea Grejsimojs. It’s a miniature portable Bluetooth speaker that looks like a purple mouse — the tail is a lanyard that can hook onto household objects so that you can hang the speaker.

If you couldn’t guess, it’s designed half as a children’s toy and half as a speaker for young parents looking to keep their kids occupied.

The Grejsimojs is a pretty straightforward portable Bluetooth speaker. It’s one trick is a mutli-speaker mode that allows you to group it with Ikea’s other portable speakers.

Naturally, the speaker is designed to be pretty tantrum-proof. It’s made of a combination of plastic and silicone (the latter comprising the feet and ears), and it’s IP44 rated — meaning it’s suitable for the bedroom, play area and kitchen, but not the bathtub.

Simple, straightforward streaming

As for the speaker itself, it’s pretty straightforward. It’s a front-firing speaker with a 1.6-inch full-range driver. And don’t expect it to get too loud — it has a built-in volume limiter to make it even more kid-friendly.

The Grejsimojs charges via USB-C and has an “up to 24 hour” battery life.

As you’d probably expect, the Grejsimojs lacks most advanced features of today’s portable Bluetooth speakers. Its one trick is that it has a multi-speaker mode, so you can group it with other Grejsimojs in kind of a barebones multi-room speaker system.

When paired with another speaker, it cannot be configured as a stereo pair — both speakers play the same audio.

The Grejsimojs boosts a 24-hour battery life when played at half volume, which is pretty good. And it charges via USB-C.

That said, to keep the price down, Ikea does not include the necessary USB-C cable and power adapter to actually charge it. So you’ll have to supply your own.

Price and availability

Ikea’s Grejsimojs portable Bluetooth speaker is available now in the UK and Europe. It costs £12, which comes out to be roughly $16 or $18.

At the time of writing, exact US pricing and availability information have not yet been released.
